Anyone know about progesterone??

post #1 of 6

Before DS I had 2 miscarriages. With DS I took Prometrium but dont remember the dose. When DS was 6 months old I got pregnant again but it ended in miscarriage at about 10 weeks. So, I have decided to take progesterone with this one... hopefully it will help it stick

so... tell me what you know about progesterone, different types/ strengths. If you are on it, when did you start taking it and when will you stop?

My midwife said she can give me an oral progesterone. I have taken vaginal suppositories before. Is one better than the other?

I'm taking both vaginal suppositories and progesterone in oil intramuscularly. From what I understand, the oral progesterone isn't as reliable as it isn't absorbed as well since it has to go through the digestive tract and the supps just go right where you put them and absorb directly.

Take that with a grain of salt though because that is just anecdotes that I have read and not actual research.

Suppositories are really easy to deal with although somewhat messy. They melt and the extra waxy gunk has to come out somehow as the prog is absorbed.

I'm currently taking 2 ccs intramuscularly every night. It is annoying and somewhat painful but necessary if I have any hope of carrying this pregnancy since I used IVF.

best= intra-muscular injections
very good= vaginal pearls
acceptable=oral pills
debatable=creams

Usually, it needs to be taken until twelve weeks because by then the placenta has taken over for the corpus luteum. Usually, the oral kind can be taken vaginally instead. The dosage for IVF patients is 3 pearls 2 times a day. You might need less since it is a natural pregnancy. I would recommend getting a blood test first and working a dosage accordingly. Perhaps you do not need it at all.

One thing to consider is that prometrium contains gelatin. I do not use gelatin-containing products because I am a vegetarian, but I noticed your screename and I thought it may be relevant to you.

I am taking Endometrium in suppository form 200 mg/day (1 suppository in a.m., one in p.m.). It was also my understanding that the suppository form was superior to oral and/or cream forms, but not necessarily as good as injectable progesterone. I began using the suppositories at 14dpo and will probably be on them until week 12. I would suggest speaking with your midwife about using suppositories this time. Good luck!

I'm also on a progesterone supplement - prometrium. Orally and suppositories. Seems to be working great as last week my progesterone was at 9.6 and now is at 25.6. Yay!!

I did really well with the oral ones my last pregnancy. I started out at 8 or 9 on my own and after the supplements I went to 16 (anything over 15 is good) and it continued to climb from there. My OB said she would put me on the suppositories (which apparently some people absorb more easily) if the oral didn't work, but since I was absorbing the oral ones fine I just stuck with that. I took three a day.

I don't need them this time, though!
