Consider removing the railing from one side of his crib and "side-carring" it to the side of your bed. This is a great way to sleep with baby and keep him in a confined space...and get some sleep yourself. If you have a high enough bed, you can even place the crib on the "infant" height setting and then lower the rail, then side-car the crib to your bed. There are a few websites that have instructions on how to do it.

Also, if you are worried about the last fall, baby may need a chiropractic adjustment if you haven't taken him yet, which can set everything right again.

I just wanted to say I posted almost the same thing in the main parenting forum last week. DD 4.5mo rolled off the bed when I was literally standing in front of her and had turned sideways to respond to DH in the hallway!

She was fine but for my own peace of mind DH who got certified as an EMT checked her pupil dilation with a flashlight and made sure that her fontanels were the same as before

Oh man, my first daughter was the QUEEN of falling...of the bed, off the potty, down stairs, off the couch. She still falls a LOT at 2 years old. We were always RIGHT THERE too.

My second DD has only had 3 falls and they were all right around because she kept unexpectedly arching her back and jerking (she learned how to crawl just a week or so later). Once off the bed, once while putting her in the baby swing, and once I dropped her while DH was passing her to me.

Every time I have felt like a horrible horrible person. The first few times I called our oncall nurse and they said as long as their pupils aren't dilated, they aren't lethargic, or vomiting they were fine. And my mother told me the laundry list of times my siblings and I fell as children as well. From the looks of this thread it seems as if babies fall a lot.

Oh, gosh, my child did that... well- let's not go into it, but I just want to say, you cannot be the world's worst mother if he's eight months and this is his first fall off the bed.

He should be fine. The first fall is nerve-wracking. But I agree, just mind the pupils, vomiting, dizziness. However an EMT once told me (I'm not even going to mention the context, I'm too embarrassed) that usually they aren't worried unless a child falls from twice her height or more.

don't feel bad!
my DS has also fallen off the bed.. with my DD we moved the mattress to the floor as soon as she was rolling.. all the way tot he floor.. so she did fall off but she only fell 10ish inches..(hard wood floors) you know what though - she cried as much if not more than DS did when he fell 3ish feet..we had a rail on one side and he rolled, in his sleep, across the entire king size bed and fell.. both of them were fine.. with DS we moved the mattress to the floor the same day he fell off the bed.. just remove the frame and box springs (to the basement, in our case) .. once he learned to crawl down from the mattress feet first, we put the box springs back and side-car'd the crib.. so far he has not fallen again..

My older DD fell off the bed twice... She is ok!

Last night, I was dragging the dirty comforter from bedroom to kitchen. I snagged it on the kitchen chair and didn't realize it and pulled and the heavy wood chair smashed my 3 month old right in the face.

It was HORRIFIC. She was ok, I am STILL not over it. You are not the only mom this kind of thing happens to.. Promise!

Don't give up!

It is so scary when they fall out of bed! Plus, it's hard to imagine that so may mothers go through it with their LOs! My lo is a squrmy wurm, and likes to get up and crawl around in the morning while I am still asleep! Luckily I wake up soon after she starts, or we would have lots more base jumping on our hands! To aid in keeping my explorer in the bed, off the floor, I pushed one side of my bed along the wall, and put a body pillow under the fitted sheet on the opp. side to form a bumper. This works well enough to keep her from rolling off and bides me a little time while I wake up! Hope this helps.. you could always keep pillows on the floor by the bed just in case! (or a large folded comforter)

I had to chuckle at this, it is so ironic. I just found out about #2 and told DF (who is a first time dad) that he should get this in his head now - no matter what you do, how careful you are, etc. at some point in time the baby will fall - off the bed, down the stairs, SOMETHING... and it probably won't get hurt, just scared.

I think he kinda blew it off, but he'll learn...

At about 6 months, DS once crawled head first into a glass door... funny thing is, he looked at that door like "wtf?" and did it again...
Now, that makes ME a bad mama, cuz I laughed... a lot.

Oh mama, if babies falling off a bed made you the worst mom ever you'd have alot of competition!! I fell off my parents bed at the ripe old age of 6weeks. Lincoln has fallen off the bed once, dove off the bed once, and flipped himself over a bed rail once. Now he climbs onto things and doesn't know how to get off - so he just goes for it, and falls on his face.

He's a perfect little boy, no harm done. He's just a bit of a dardevil.

You are NOT the worst mom ever!!! It's so easy to feel that way, and we all feel that way sometimes, but you're a good mom and everything will be ok.
