H1N1 ... talk me down....

I had been totally at peace and confident in my decision to not get anybody in our family this shot, but the closer it comes the more worried I become. It's mostly Charlotte that I'm worried about. If it weren't for her, I don't think I'd think twice.

With the girls at school, I fully expect them to get it, so it's a matter of KEEPING her from getting it while still caring for my big girls. Should I maybe get vaccinated (especially since I'm not nursing?)? My husband?

Would someone do the math for me? The statistics of my girls having complications from it - or Charlotte contracting it and/or having complications. I want to feel better about this but I'm nervous!!!! My kids have NO underlying health issues and have strong immune systems.

I don't remember if there's a reason why you're not nursing...is it at all possible for you to at least pump once or twice a day to give Charlotte a little bit of breastmilk? I'm sure you're not completely dry yet, and if you are, I bet after only a few days of pumping, you'll get some milk again. The CDC released a caution that formula fed babies are at higher risk of complications from any flu (this has always been true, so don't panic over it!) because of the inflammation that formula causes in the mucous membranes. If you can, pump, that will make a HUGE difference!! AND, if you find that you get more than a few ounces, I'd even give your other girls some breastmilk every day, just mix it with their oatmeal or cereal, they'll never know (I give Ian several ounces a day of pumped milk, and I'm still nursing Connor, and of course nursing Gavin, so they're all getting some). You could also look into some donor milk if you have any nursing friends and aren't opposed to that.

BUT...all that aside...remember that H1N1 still remains a mild illness in a huge majority of the people who are contracting it. It's a flu, so it'll still stink, fever, sore throat, aches, and it has a gastro component to it so there may be some pukes, but it is still very mild most of the time. Charlotte will still have some placental immunities that might help, too.

My bigger worry would be if she does contract a fever in the first 3 months, most hospitals have a "fever protocol" that includes blood, urine, xray, and spinal tap. I have fought this "protocol" before, I tell them they can start with blood, urine, and xray, and then--and only then--if they are all negative, then we will discuss the spinal tap. Connor was hospitalized at 9 weeks old with a fever, and they wanted to do a spinal tap, yet the chest xray and urine were both positive, so he was already going to be admitted and started on IV antibiotics, what was the point of the spinal tap?? They finally saw my logic and we didn't do that test. So if Charlotte were to get sick, especially if your other girls are sick and you suspect it's a flu, I would seriously consider NOT letting them follow the "typical" protocol, ask for a flu test first, then blood, urine, etc whatever other tests you're comfortable with and remember that you can say no to anything. DOn't let them go crazy testing her when it's just the flu!!

Overzealous doctors are my biggest worry this flu season, not Gavin getting the flu! Now Connor getting the flu, THAT worries me, but he's a different case altogether.

SO...calm down, remember that it's a mild virus, remember that all your immune systems will be stronger if they are left alone (not invaded by a vaccine) and if you do get sick, let your immune system do its job fighting it off. Go to Mercola's webpage for general flu-fighting tips (like increase garlic, lots of Vit D [natural, if you can depending on where you live], lots of raw veggies, etc).

Can you tell me about the placental immunities, I still have some frozen placenta and I am wondering if I should give some to my 3yr old??

it IS mass hysteria - and I keep trying to remind myself of this everytime I read/hear some horror story, but JEEZ! It's succeeding in freaking me out. (the illogical I have a newborn side of me, that is)

Read this...I really non-panicky, common-sense information and advice.

Abi--Placental immunities means maternal immunities that pass to baby via the placenta, I don't think they "stored" there and can be passed after birth. But I don't know for sure! I'm giving my oldest son some expressed breastmilk to help keep him healthy, I'm nursing my other two, try that!

2boys - thankyou so much for the link to that article, I really needed to read that!! I was just at the dr yesterday and she was really pushing that our whole family (aside from Olivia) should be getting the vaccine. I normally really trust my doc, but just don't feel good about this vaccine. Of course, I don't feel good about letting my 6 week old get really sick either...argh, being a parent is hard.
