First Timer Question's

Hey Everyone!

I have been reading through a lot of the threads here. I personally have a midwife but as I progress through my pregnancy I find that I am drawn more and more toward UC. I am of the mind that no one can take better care of me then me, and have a feeling that's going to hold true through my pregnancy. I am looking for a good book to start with. I have a bunch of books and have put all of them down about 1/2 through because they stop resonating with me. They talk about the fear and pain and the biologist in me KNOWS there is no way a woman's body has been doing this for umpteen generations and it has promoted the basic Darwinian principals for survival of a species and now, all the sudden it's this huge scary, overwhelming, dis-ease (affliction) that women (and only women) get. Is there any book that you would recommend a newbie that is very research oriented and science brained but also believes in her body and its abilities? Someone recommended "Active Birth: the New Approach to Giving Birth Naturally" but I would like to get a little more feedback! The list I got that book off of was from 2005. There was also one called simply "Unassisted Childbirth." Most of these books are older, is there really no new research/books being published on this?

I was also looking at "Wise Woman Herbal for the Childbearing Year" and was curious if I could get personal recommendations from anyone? I use homeopathy and herbs but my herb knowledge is minimal (outside of culinary). I am very into herbalism and other alternative modalities and would love some feedback there (I want to keep my house well stocked with appropriate herbs) and cover my bases! Plus this is just an area I would like to gain more knowledge...so...there's nothing more valuable then a good, well researched book!

Thank you!

xo

This is one of the few books I won't loan out to friends. I would highly recommend it! It's well organized, easy to read, gives specific information about dosing, and preparation.

Henci Goer has some good books that are heavy on the research...I'm trying to remember titles. I believe the first one is "The Thinking Woman's Guide to Birth"...now if you've already decided on natural/home/possible UC then a lot of the info is stuff you already know (or don't need to know) because it's geared to 'beginners' so to speak. But it is a good book all the same.
I know there are a couple that are highly recommended for UC prep, I just don't know what they are...

Great Thanks! brightonwoman if you happen to think of them please feel free to drop me a line. I am not a 'beginner' I guess. I have wanted a home birth since I decided I wanted to have children. The UC is a newer concept. I recently read an amazingly inspiring article in Mothering that flipped a switch in me. I couldn't figure out why I wasn't 'thrilled' with any midwife I met and I think it's because I resonate much higher with just me and my hubby being present!

But I do need info so that I can feel prepared. I don't have a background in human medicine. I worked as a vet tech for a few years and have my degree in Biology so I feel like as long as I do a lot of research I will be good to go!

If you want facts and scientific info, I highly do NOT recommend you from buying Unassisted Childbirth. I hated the book, way too out there for me.

Childbirth Without Fear by Grantly Dick-Read

Maybe also Mind Over Labor by Carl Jones

Thanks!!

I love the info. There is just so much to read and I have to buy most of these books because my library doesn't have any of them! I want to make sure I can get my hands on something that I'm not going to put down halfway through (like all my books I've already got!).
