We sure are!! I was nervous at first so I have tried the sns a couple random times to be sure and the most I could get him to take was just under 3 oz and he was so full he was gagging at the end of the feeding. I also pumped after my midwife appt cuz he skipped a feeding (long story) and I was curious to see what I had and I ended up getting 3 oz. So that also made me feel better.

That's really wonderful! I'm so happy you are having success. I'm also so glad your pediatrician seems supportive at this point!

It's very nice to have our pediatrician being supportive again!! It was rough for a while, and I am sure that it was me being too sensitive about it all, when he didn't seem supportive of breastfeeding. It's nice to know that we are on the same page again. Now if I could just convince him of the benefits of nursing past a year! With my 2 yr old he told me at his 1 yr check up that we should be weaning him from nursing. I just shut my mouth and nodded. So we will cross that bridge when we get there I guess. Since I know to expect it this time I will have information printed and ready to show him!

I didn't read ALL of the replies, but has anyone suggested getting a second opinion...from a pediatritian who really supports breastfeeding?

This is the wife:
Hi there I have been wondering how things are going for you.
I want to caution you on taking the suppliments away too quickly, if you read on kellymom.com it will tell you how to wean him off them. Taking them all away too fast can be very bad for babies immune system.
I wanted to add that when we were weaning our little guy off the suppliments they had us weighing him daily to make sure he was getting enough and that my supply was keeping up.
I also wanted to let you know that I am very proud that you are getting through this, but want to caution you to be very careful. Any loss in a 4 month old is not a good thing so just keep a close eye on it.
Have you gotten a scale for your own use at home yet? I think it could be HUGE help for you. The last thing that you want it to have him loose too much.

I am sure that your midwife is just trying to make you realize that things can happen. Having to suppliment is not the end of the world, you still have a beautiful baby to hold and love and that is what matters.

I am anxious to hear how things continue to go, keep up the hard work and be sure to do what is best for you and the baby.

Thank you for your concern. The weaning of supplements, however was not my doing. It was up to him, if he even seems remotely fussy after a feeding he gets it still. The problem was that his nursing went from 15-20 minutes at the breast with it to 10 minutes tops and only taking an average of 2.5 oz until he was so full he would gag and stop eating. So I am letting him lead me on that. However, I do know that supplementing is not the end of the world, all that matters is a healthy little baby. And with the SNS we still get to have our bf'ing relationship! So it's the best of both worlds I will be watching him closely and making sure that he isn't losing weight, if I have any suspicion at all, I won't hesitate taking him in for a weight check since I don't want us to have any set backs now!

It is good to hear that you are watching him. The wife just wanted to make sure that you were watching closely. It sounds like you are trying hard and that your little guy is doing well. I hope that things continue to go well and you keep us posted.
Keep it up and good luck

Oh I by no means take any offense at anything anyone has said to this point, I really appreciate all the help you wonderful people have been offering me! He took 2 oz bm supplement just a little bit ago, first supp needed in a few days. But he was crabby and wouldn't sleep so thought it was a decent thing to try. And now he still won't sleep but is in much better spirits, smiling and giggling.

Well today is fine, he seems to be getting a little better finally. Just hope that things continue this way. I thought my supply might have dipped yesterday morning, so I supplemented him with 1.25 oz, which led to disaster. He waited 4 hours before his next feed (even with me trying to encourage him). So I didn't do anymore supplement the rest of the day and he went back and stuck to his every 2 hours feeding. We had a trip to the ER two nights ago due to wheezing and coughing hard enough to gag and throw up. They did chest x-rays and RSV swab and all they could tell me was "we don't know, he seems totally healthy". So I know it's generally frowned upon but I went ahead and gave him 2 half nebulizer treatments and he is doing worlds better now. Along with some tylenol twice and he is almost a new man again! Tell your wife that I really appreciate all her time spent thinking about us. Oh yea, the hospital weighed him at 11# 4 oz still. I know it's not a gain, but as far as I'm concerned, it's also not a loss. With him being sick I am more worried about him not losing than I am about him gaining. Which might be wrong, but it's how I'm dealing with it. I will keep you all posted, wed is our next weight check with the ped so I am doing my best to get him healthy by then.

JMHO, I think you are totally right to be more concerned about not losing then gaining, when he has been a bit sick. Illness, as I understand it, often has a short-term dip in weight because his body is focusing on taking care of the illness. That's the first priority, and now that he is better, his body can focus on gaining again. As long as all other indications are good: poops, pees, seems satisfied and healthy in general.
We'll be waiting for your news Wed!

Wonderful, thank you for those very encouraging words! He is still pooping at least 2-3 times a day, and peeing more than ever before. He can also pull up tears when he is trying to look pathetic. He seems very satisfied after each feeding, and the only time he doesn't is when it's nap time for him!

Update

Hi everyone, we had a weight check today. I was nervous as he's been sick almost all of the last two weeks so I didn't think he would have gained much since he didn't want to supplement at all. So he weighed in at 11 lbs 10 oz (6 oz gained)(empty tummy) and our ped said that since he had been sick and not supplementing, that was perfectly fine weight gain. He said that since he seems healthier to try and use more supplement again for a little while and to see him back in 2 weeks. I told him that I wasn't worried about the supplement while he was sick, I was more worried about keeping him hydrated and on a good schedule and he said that I was absolutely right. He said that he would talk to me about solids in 2 more weeks, I told him I wasn't in a rush to introduce the empty calories of cereal just yet, and he said that was fine. I am so relieved to hear that he agreed with my line of thinking while sick. Such a relief!!

update 11-18

I only have a couple minutes since I am borrowing my sisters computer. But I wanted to let you know that we had a weight check on this last wednesday and he weighed in at 12 # 2 oz and had grown 1.5 inches in about a month (minus a couple days) and his head and gained 2 cm!! The ped said to go a month this time. And that what we are doing now for hm seems to be working very well. I am so thankful for all your help and support!

Just in case anyone follows this post anymore I wanted to let you know that he is doing AWESOME! He has finally made it back on the growth curve (10th%) He weighed in at 18# 12 oz on the 24th. He has another ear infection following a cold. And two months ago he weighed 16# 8 oz. So he is gaining great. We no longer have weight checks, only when he is scheduled for a well baby check up or if he is sick. He is eating solids with us at every meal and still nursing every 2-3 hours around the clock. He loves his boobs lol, which makes me (beyond) happy. I am still taking dom (60 mg/day), and when I feel like I need a boost I also take Motherlove More Milk Plus once or twice with Goat's Rue. He is such a happy boy and now has 3 teeth, working on #4. This has been an amazing journey, and one that I don't know how I survived. I'm just very thankful to have made this journey a success story. Thank you for all your help and kind words

Just happened to check in, and what great news! 10th % is fabulous! My 10 mo is still only in the 20th % for weight, and he never had any dips, so I think 10th is great news for your guy!
Happy to hear you are all doing well.
