Okay, I am going to take a little poll, as I am torn about what I need to do. I am making some preemie sized PFs for my expected full term but smallish baby. I can't discount the possibility of a preterm baby, because of some issues I have had, but for now, I am feeling fine. The OS diapers I have will suffice once the baby is a little bigger, and work great for my 25lb toddler. However, I know they will swallow the baby, and I really want to start CDing her ASAP.
This is what I thought would be fun and soft; terry to make some 10x14 PFs. I cut the 45x60" terry into 8 rectangles, and folded them to the middle to make them the right width. I am putting a stretch cotton knit on the ends, to make the ends a little elastized and for decoration. The middle of the terry does overlap about 2 inches in the middle. My plan was to put a soft flannel in the middle topstitched for the inside. But, then, I really thought that it would be easy and convenient to make them into prefitteds. So, the extra from the middle sides will end up in the middle as a nice little soaker. I will sew that down, which will quilt it a little.
And, my ultimate plan is to cover the middle of the outer soaker area (just a strip) with a fleece to make it moisture resistant, so she can go coverless or just with single layer fleece pants or sleeper. I don't want to put too much bulk on her, so I may have to forgo that. But, I wondered, after I fold the double layers of the middle sides to the inside, there will be some bulk with the terry. Unless I remove those pieces entirely, and lay them end to end instead of over each other and put them in the inside of the diaper. I will put elastic at the legs as prefitteds are made.
Here's my question. Do I still put that soft flannel (or flannelette) over the middle inside? Will a newborn need that extra layer? Will it be more comfortable than the terry next to her bottom? I have almost always used several packages of NB sposies before using cloth. A couple times I tried cloth from the very beginning, but I made AIOs, or did regular or flannel PFs in the covers. And, the babies didn't seem to like it too much. But, eventually, they started to just take longer before actually wetting, and then crying after they did so to be changed.
I thought terry would be so soft. If she needs the flannel, I can hide it in the middle between the two terry layers if the terry would be more comfy. Any ideas? Kymberli
