Vacations where using cloth isn't an option--what do you do?

We're going on vacation the last week of October and I've reluctantly agreed to buy disposable diapers for the trip. I don't know what the laundry situation is going to be like and my stash is big enough to last two days, maybe. I had Huggies newborn diapers for the first week (didn't want to deal with meconium) and I was totally grossed out by them. My other two kids got rashes from Pampers so I am not even going that route. Has anyone tried Seventh Generations? They're a little more pricey but chlorine free. I also noticed there's some sort of Huggies "Natural" diapers.

Basically is there a non gross disposable that works well? Like one that doesn't smell like chemicals and leave those little gel balls all over the baby whenever he pees? That's what grossed me out about the Huggies. He wouldn't even be sitting in them that long and I would change his diaper and have to wipe all these gel balls off of him.

Or is there another option you can think of? Liners or something? Thank you!!

There was a thread recently & it seemed that not everyone had the same experience with the gel even using the same diapers - weird. I've tried the store brand "natural" diapers with some success.

I've never had a problem with gel beads coming out of a disposable when I use them. I have heard of that happening if they are in the same diaper too long and it gets too full though .

Otherwise, gro baby has some bio liners that you can use with their diapers. As does that other cloth brand who's name has escaped me. But gro baby is one size (big plus). Personally, liners don't seem that great, I'd just go with disposables. Huggies has an organic brand if you prefer something better. I sampled one and really liked it.

Nature Babycare

We were using cloth full time until about two months ago, when we took on three special needs foster children. I just can't do the laundry anymore, so we are using Nature Babycare disposables. A bit pricier than regular, but they are the only 100% biodegradable sposie. I order them on Amazon.com in a case of four bags, so you get free shipping. If you sign up for "Subscribe and Save" you get another 15% off and you can just cancel it later.

I have also had success with Baby Naturecare diapers. Of all the mainstream and "eco-friendly" versions, these are my favorite.

I used the subsribe and save as well to get 15% off -- you just click unsubscribe sometime before the 6 months is over.

For vacations, I like to bring a couple diaper covers or pocket diapers to use both as swim diapers and at night to put over disposables.

eta: and no bead gels all over. I have had them break open (at the beach after being filled with sea water) but they have a cotton-y type of filling. Not near as gross as the other stuff.

I found the store brands had less issues with weird perfume smell as such than the national brands. We often used sposies on vaccations and I sposied at night didn't have gel issue. Mostly used huggies and kroger brand diapers. my DD is allergic to something they put in like ALL the 7th generation products we can't even buy there paper towels dish soaps detergents ect cause she reacts to those.

I like the 7th generation ones, no rashes, stinks, or major leaks here when we've used them on trips or with our newborn before he fit in small cloth dipes.

Have you tried Gro Baby? They have cloth shells and cloth inserts/doublers. However, they also have biodegradable inserts that you can just toss. It is a nice middle ground for travel.

Good luck and have a great trip.

I was thinking about the Gro Baby but I think I'd rather spend the money on some wool, especially when this is the only two weeks that my husband will be home and we're actually travelling.

Thank you for all of the responses! They are SO appreciated!

We used sposies when we were on vacation over the summer. We used 7th gen and earths best. They worked fine for pee but every poop diaper was an explosion! It sucked. I missed my cloth so much!

seventh generation is good. used it for with my daughter while traveling. I also just tried another brand nature babycare which is better than huggies pure and gentle. I must say I like the nature babycare the best though.

I haven't had problems with Pampers except that they leak poop all the time, so we are switching to Huggies for our next trip.

You could get some Booroi covers and use gdiaper liners (and then use prefolds in them afterwards). Or just get a gdiaper package. You can also use prefolds in the gdiaper cover.

Bumgenius has a new cloth hybrid option.

We are using the Baby Naturecare diapers for this month because my son is at a daycare for this month and the class does not use cloth (they did in the infant rooms). They are working well.

Good luck
