Stinky Cloth Diapers

We're broke. So I have two cloth diapers covers. You know, the plastic pants. DD uses them 3-4 times before I wash them, unless DD poops of course. I air dry one while she's wearing another one. Anyway, the smell doesn't bug me, but MIL thinks DD is smelly and doesn't want DD wearing cloth dipes. Every time I have DD in a cloth, MIL makes some comment

Anywho, DD also has a rash, which, when she wears disposable dipes for a couple days, goes away. I'm pretty good at changing her. I probably change her cloth dipe about every 2-4 hours. Sometimes I'm not aware when she's wet because we're in the car, etc.

I don't want to switch to disposables and neither does DP. But MIL keeps bringing them home, and they tempt me, so I fall of the cloth dipe wagon... hehe.

Any rash/stinky dipe advice? TIA

expose the baby' bum to fresh for a few minutes. use the diaper w/out the cover so air can circulate and a water proof pad under the baby. calendua oil or cream is the best for healing diaper rash. rinse diapers in vinegar to help with smell. checkout my blog for more diaper tips. www.naturalpureessentials.wordpress.com. good luck

2-4 hrs is probably not enough changing. I find that dipes need to be changed hourly even if they aren't totally wet, because they do start to smell when left on too long. I know you said you're broke but, is it possible to find some wool sweaters to chop up to make into covers? That way there is more air circulation Could help w/the rash too.

Plus boiling or a tiny amt of bleach occasionally can help with stinkies.

Wool covers? Wouldn't the pee soak though?

Diaper rash is due to wetness that your baby feels while on cloth diaper. You have to change the diaper as soon as it is wet... which can be as often as every hour. If you want to leave her for 2-4 hours, I would use a dry liner which keeps her bottom dry, even when the prefolds are wet.

The dry liner is great for night time, or running errands when you can't change the wet diaper right away. The fleece keeps her bottom completely dry.

Not if it is lanolized. Wool is a great material for covers because of it breathability and waterproofness. You'd want to choose a 100% wool sweater thats tightly knit almost to the point of being felted. I know there are patterns for them online. They're called recycled longies.

Wool covers that are readymade tend to be expensive but are highly sought after! Some brands that come to mind are loveybums, kiwi pie, nikky's.....

When you say plastic pants do you mean like gerber or like dappi. Gerbers just hold in odor like nothing I can smell those things from across the room to me the stink even with out the diaper being wet plus they hld in moisture and increase chances of a rash.. The dappi IMHO are a TON better. A 2 pack of dappi can be ordered for about $6 If when you can swing it I highly reccomend them. I'd also aim for having at least 3 covers to to rotate one to change out if messy..

I would suggest to your MIL that instead of buying sposies, she get you some more covers. And I'd look into wool and fleece (if someone can get it for you as a gift, or make/recycle some yourself). It will help her bum breathe and avoid skin issues. I think the fleece needs to be 100% polyester for this, and you need to lanolize the wool before use (it's not that hard, there are lots of picture guides online for how to).

I agree that changing more often will help too.

I agree changing more often will help. ALso, let baby go without a diaper for a period of time. If you can convince MIL, have her purchase a few new covers, so you can switch more often.

I mean the diaper covers that are lined with plastic inside. Mine are Bambino Mio. I just call them that, I don't know if that's the actual name or not. In fact I find the whole cloth diaper thing confusing. Does a liner mean the paper-y things that are supposed to wick moisture away from her skin?

Here's what I do: liner (paper-y thing that's flushable) cloth dipe, cloth/plastic cover.

Ha, I don't even really know what I'm doing I guess
