When your 6-week-old cries or fusses...

When your 6-week-old cries or fusses, what do you do? Nurse right away? Check diaper? Something else?

I pretty much nurse him every time he fusses. He wouldn't nurse if he didn't want to, right? He's gaining weight very quickly, like my older son who was 20 pounds by around 3 months old! He still has very little awake/alert time. He pretty much nurses and sleeps all day. Should I be encouraging more alert time, putting him down and/or interacting with him instead of giving him the boob? I've half-heartedly tried to delay nursing but he gets annoyed. I wasn't sure if I should try harder, through his annoyed grunts. I can't remember what I did with my older son, but he didn't nurse and sleep this much.

ETA: He nurses mostly nonstop during the day. There is no every 1-hour, 2-hour, 3-hour schedule or anything... as much as I wish there was, LOL!

Sounds like he's content & growing well - good job!

As long as he is happy making good diapies and growing all is well. DD was just like your DS. She literally slept the entire first 3 months of her life, then all of a sudden the batteries were charged up. And she hasn't stopped going since! So be encouraged you're doing great!

Why work harder than you have to is my feeling. If nursing makes a baby happy and mamma doesn't mind, nurse the baby!
