Postpartum Weight Loss

Thread Starter
So...I was about 192 at my last visit before birth. Now 7 days postpartum I am 177. How is everyone else going with weight loss?

And does anyone know what is "normal" for weight loss? Last time I was too overwhelmed to monitor it so this time I want to maximize the weight loss...

Baby will be 4 weeks on Friday and I have lost 20 of the 30lbs that I gained. I am REALLY wanting to loose this last 10 but don't have any motivation to help it along lol

With DS I gained 9 lbs. and lost 29 within a week of going home. With DD this time I gained nothing and now, 12 days postpartum, have lost 24 pounds. I'm wearing jeans that were a size too small pre-pregnancy because the others were literally falling off of me.

My problem is keeping the weight off. My body seems to like being the weight I was before getting pregnant, ugh. And 24 pounds lighter or not, I look awful since not a bit of it is muscle and everything's shifted to the wrong place.

I weighed 150 lbs the day I gave birth, two weeks ago. I weighed myself a week ago and was down to 135 lbs, but I'm not sure what I weigh now. So, I have about 20 lbs still to lose to get back to my pp weight. I read that you are only supposed to lose 1 pound per week, but I have a hard time buying that. I have also read that if you lose too much weight all at once, you will release a larger amount of toxins into your body, which are stored in your fat and can potentially get into your breastmilk. So, there must be a balance somewhere between too much and not enough. The thought of it taking me 20 weeks, that's 5 months, to lose the rest of my pregnancy weight is totally not OK with me. I am watching what I eat very closely and am walking regularly. I will start back with an aerobic workout once my postpartum bleeding is finished and I don't have to wear a big pad to workout in.

I lost almost all my weight in the hospital before I came home. DS weighed 8lbs9oz and I had only gained 16 lbs, so I basically had lost it all with the placenta and fluid, etc...When I got weighed at my 1 wk check I had 3lbs to go to pre-preg weight. I also have to lose about 10-15 lbs I never lost with DD. I am wearing my normal pants again, whoo-hoo. I actually need to wear a belt, but I need a new belt.

Last time I was 6lbs below my pre-pg weight when I left the hospital - which means I lost 18lbs pretty much instantly. (I gained 12lbs last time, but I haven't seen the underside of 200lbs in years)

However, my pre-pg pants did NOT fit for a good 6mo. So I am totally jealous of anyone who is quickly into pre-pg clothes.

I think that losing 15-20lbs within a week of the birth is pretty normal since most of that weight would be baby, placenta, fluid, etc. After that... I think we all just revert to whatever speed our bodies normally lose weight at, with maybe a small boost from BFing/not having time to eat/trying to eat better because we are BFing.

Oh, this gives me hope.
I started at 170, and I'm now 213. When I stand up, my knees hurt from all this extra weight.
I'm supersuper swollen, so I'm really hoping to lose a lot of this water within a few days of giving birth. I'm certain that I will feel much better then!

Man some of you ladies lose the weight quick. I must say I am extrememly jealous!!!!!

At my last appointment I was 167 and today (9 days post pardom) I am 149 lbs. I was at 154 when I left the hospital. I am really not losing this weight very easily. I have 39 lbs still to lose. I have been eating 2-3 peices of fruit a day and trying to drink as much water as possible. I don't feel like anything is going to help me out though.

It takes me a year to loose the weight. I usually gain 40 lbs.( have gained 40 with 3 pregnancies from eating nothing to perfectly healthy to eating nothing but crap). I still look very pregnant 6 weeks pp.

I weigh eight pounds less than my pre-pregnancy weight at 8 days PP. I only gained three and half pounds, though. I'm trying to be really good about my eating so that the weight that is still one from the previous four babies will start to melt away! I'm ready to get my body back for good. DH has his vasectomy appointment a week from tomorrow.

I'm am crashing from the Sept DDC, but I can chime in with my weight loss with all 3 kids.

With DS1 I gained about 35lbs, 15 lost by the time I came home from the hospital, and another 10 within the first two weeks pp. I started Weight Watchers at 2 weeks pp, and added exercise when I felt up to it and actually lost the last 10lbs by 7 weeks pp. I lost all the weight, but body took a while to look the same, hips shifting back to normal, etc.

With DS2 I actually started out in better shape, worked out throughout my pregnancy, but gained 40lbs. I lost about 15 again by the time I left the hospital, another 5 in the first few weeks, and had to really bust my ass to lost the last 20 through weight watchers and doing a lot of StrollerFit. It took about 4 months to lose it all.

With DS3 (4 weeks old now!) I gained 40lbs again, although I was in MUCH better shape to start, worked out until the day I delivered, did a lot of pilates etc. Lost 20ish lbs the first couple of days, and another 5 in the first two weeks. I just started WW and getting seriously back to my workouts this week and I have dropped another 5 lbs. So at 4 weeks pp I have about 10 to get to my pre-pregnancy weight, although ideally I would like to lose another 5 beyond that. The real trick is getting to look the way I did pre-pregnancy. I anticipate doing a LOT of pilates and cardio in the coming months.
I find myself having to start getting very serious about weight loss and diet within the first month otherwise I'm afraid I will settle into my new size and invest in clothes and make it too easy to keep the extra weight on. That is especially important ot me this time around with the holidays and all the good eating opportunities looming in the near future.
