I need some ideas....yup it is this week and we have left it to the last minute, thought I would come up with something brilliant. We have looked at lego but it all seems to be a set of some sort - would just like some plain old lego. Any ideas would be great. He does like to build things. We are video gameless. ...although he really would like one. But he does like to do pretty much anything.

you should check out the thread on the six year old who loves Legos.

That said, I will recap a couple of my suggestions that might work for you.

K'nex -- they have lots of "sets" but also tubs of open-ended building possibilities. They also have sets that can be motorized.

Uberstix -- http://www.uberstix.com/ This is something I am considering for my son, but don't have yet. They look really cool, though!

Good luck.

And my two cents that I posted in the above mentioned Lego thread:

Brio Mech Sets

I also chimed in in the lego thread. However, I am going to suggest this: http://www.klutz.com/toys/Foxtail-Sport every child we've ever given one to has loved it. Sporty kid and nerdling alike!

I should probably clarify that this is my 6 year old DS. He likes knights, superheros, playing make believe....etc.

What about a Playmobil castle set? I think most Costco's have a good one in stock right now.
Our Target usually has a small selection, although independent toy stores would be a better bet.
