Tips for staying awake while snuggling to sleep

I really should ask my child. He's an expert at not-going-to-sleep while we snuggle.

ETA: ExtrovertKid is 3 1/2.

Those of you who snuggle to sleep, how do you keep yourself awake? For a while I thought that if I could fall asleep with him, then I must need the sleep. But when I fall asleep that early I sleep poorly all night.

If I read with a book light, it annoys him/makes him more awake. Sometimes my husband is able to snuggle and read on his iPhone, but my son seems to tolerate that better with my husband than me.

Sometimes it works to try to think through a problem/idea, but it's got to be a pretty engaging idea to keep me awake most nights!

ExtrovertKid is slowly growing out of his need to be snuggled to sleep, but I'm sure it'll be a long time before he doesn't need it any more. About 1 night in 10-ish he'll snuggle for a few minutes and then roll further onto his sidecarred bed to fall asleep without touching. Most of the time he's still a "we must be nose-to-nose" kind of guy. He is also that way during the day, if it helps to know that. He's an only child and emphatically not into independent play. He plays alone when he's pooping, and that's about it.

I snuggle my 3 y-o DS to sleep every night. Being 37 weeks pregnant, I usually fall asleep before he does, and also sleep poorly if I don't get up (8 pm is just too darn early to call it a night). I usually ask my husband to check on us every 10 minutes, and to wake me as soon as he knows DS is out cold. Or, if I'm alone with DS, I drink a tall glass of water 30 minutes before bed time. This is guaranteed to make me get up withing the hour to go to the bathroom (but that might only work on pregnant moms...).

Hee. Yeah, for me that would make me guaranteed to wake up between 3 and 5 AM.

I lie down with my 3.5-year-old twins every night to put them to sleep. I have only fallen asleep once in all these years, and that was a month or so ago when I had been really sick for a week, had a fever, and no help. I just usually think about all the stuff I have to do, and that keeps me from falling asleep. My husband on the other hand, falls asleep almost every time he puts them to bed.

I found listening to podcasts on the ipod has worked well. Ironically there is a great one my Mary Sheedy Kurchinca author of Sleepless in America that I have enjoyed.

But now we lost our ipod and I fall asleep alot of nights. I am just so tired.

Gotta run.

another vote for the ipod! it has revolutionized nursing babies to sleep!

sometimes i have to contain my glee: "ahh.... i have to lay in bed and relax and listen to something entertaining/uplifting." it is a welcome break!
