That reminds me: Not a family reaction but one by DH's friend...Apparently he looked a bit disgusted/amused/surprised and said, "You're going to put actual $**t in your washer?" DH asked the same question you did (about soiled clothing/sheets/etc) and he was like, "Well, then you HAVE to do it."

We still kid about it. In fact, DH talked to him the other day and said that yes, we did put $**t in our washer and it was going fine.

Ew. You mean like an actual hunk of poo? My boys wore sposies, and I never threw their poop away and didn't really know that people do that. I always shook the poo into the toilet, then wrapped up the dipe.

Yep, most people just wrap the poop up in the disposable and throw the whole thing away. Even though it says on most disposable diaper package to dump the waste first. And technically, it is illegal in most places to put human waste into the landfill. It is supposed to be put in the toilet and treated through the waste water system. If people used disposable diapers the way they are meant to use any diaper, dumping the waste and changing after every pee, probably more people would use cloth.

My family was supportive; they know better than to question our parenting decisions People who think it's weird often don't understand how diapering (or parenting) works, the way you do what is best for the baby, not necessarily what is most "convenient" for the parent. I've had childless people say they won't do cloth because they don't want to deal with poop. Well, you have to wipe the bum regardless of what type of diaper the baby wears and it's a rare parent who hasn't actually been pooped ON!

And not just re: CDs, either.

Yep. I don't know any sposie-user who dumps the poo in the toilet before they throw it in the trash.

When you are pg with your first, it is often best not to tell people what you plan to do, b/c to other parents, you have no credibility b/c you haven't been in the trenches yet. Not fair, but pretty common. I would not get into a debate about why cloth is better. Just practice lines like, "Nevertheless, we will be using cloth diapers," and "You may be right, but we will be using cloth," and "Nice weather we're having, huh?"

I am sorry the response to your choice has been so cool.

I received the same from my mil when it came to many things (ie, cd's, nursing, co-sleeping)
I just choose to move past it with the blinders on and continue to do as I wished, they can either support or not, but either way I was using cloth.

For my first shower back in 1989, I asked for cloth.................and my family supported my idea with 6 dozen prefolds.

was the very best gift i received for any of my babies.

I hope you get exactly what you hope for. Best Wishes!

When the discussion of cloth diapers came up with my Mom she was skeptical at first too. But as we discussed it further I discovered what really made cloth diapers a nightmare for my Mother:

1. Washers and dryers were not as prevalent in households, nor as efficient as they are today. For my older two brothers my Mom had to rinse the diapers out in the toilet then wash them in her bathtub and hang them to dry. For me, well the washer couldn't handle as many diapers and she still had to scrape the dipes or they would come out with stains or worse.

2. The pins only really came in one style that would get dull quickly, making it hard to get through a diaper and like a dull knife would skip and either stick the baby or the caregiver.

3. Covers were a cheap stiff plastic that didn't breathe at all and therefore created a disgusting environment of hot steamy excrement, thus leading to bacteria growth and severe diaper rash.

4. The covers and diapers had to be changed constantly or they would start to leak.

Before my son was born, I bought a package of Green Mountain Diapers prefolds and a couple of thirsties wraps and a snappi. I took them with me on a visit to my Mother's and demonstrated the "new" cloth diapering. From that point forward my Mom has been a cloth diapering supporter. She was even pleased to be able to use some of her old diaper folding know-how.

Yeah that. I'll change dd in a public bathroom or somewhere on the go, and have ladies ooo and aww over the baby and then see the snappi and go nuts. "There wasn't anything like that when I had kids..."

i had this happen with two older ladies this summer "Are those old-fashioned cotton diapers! I didn't even know you could still buy those!" and they went nuts for the snappi. I wanted to say, no. they're NEW fashioned cotton diapers!

I was pretty down on CDs before I started nannying a little lady who's mom uses them. I remember bitching to my friends about the cloth diaper lady whose kid I was going to be watching and how grody it was going to be blah blah blah...flash forward six months later and the CDs aren't gross or a problem at all, they're actually super easy...granted I don't have to wash them YET but I'm not pg with my our first (and second) babies and plan to CD. Diapers for twins is going to be very expensive and I've read so much about how the CDs are better for baby buns regarding rash etc. that I'm very interested in saving the $$ and they're baby skin.

I agree with the pp who said something about parenting being about the babes and not what's easiest or most convenient for the parents. I'm surprised/hurt when I hear MIL make comments about me gaining too much weight and not wanting the babies too big bc who wants to carry around 14 lbs. of baby. I'm sorry but if I can grow these little beans to 7 lbs. each I'll be a happy woman. It might not be fun/comfortable for me but it will be better for them and that's what's important...sorry tangent but I'm OK with some of the decisions we've made for our children that aren't mainstream and fly in the face of "convenience"
