How can i help myself?

Hello everybody! Is there a "way" I can help myself with issues from my past without going to talk to someone? Are their techniques for self-help? Kinda like theraphy for yourself? I can't afford nor have the time to see someone and who would i see anyway...a therapist, conselor or shrink?
Which one does what?
I had a bad childhood and i am very aware of how and what my toxic mother does and says. I don't want to wind up like her.

I will try to remember to come back later today when I can post a longer response. In short, if you want to see someone, there are low- and no-cost options available. Psychiatrists prescribe meds and don't do therapy much. Social workers, licensed therapists, and counselors (who have a different licensing in some places) do counseling, as do nurse practitioners in some states (regulations vary). The best luck I've had is with a licensed therapist, but it depends on your needs/personality.

As for self-help, yes it's definitely out there. I will look for some resources to post. I think everyone who's survived a hellish childhood will have to do a significant amount of self-help to heal whether that person gets counseling or not.

There are a lot of resources for self-help. The Work by Byron Katie has been really effective for a lot of people.
