Child bite - no tetnus!

My daughter was bit by another child at daycare. My daughter is unvaxed and my first thought was exactly that! Should I be worried? What provokes that type of behavior in 2 yr olds anyways?

My son has been bitten about 4 times at daycare. He had the Dtap only up until 4 months old. (Not sure if it may have "Warn off" by now) I also have a 11 month old in daycare, who has had nothing, and I have never given the bitting alot of thought. I worry about the summer time when they are running around outside barefoot, but not enough to jab them just yet. I plan to wait until they are maybe 3, and then getting them JUST a tetanus, no cocktails. But I am still on the fence.

Do you think the other child had tetnus spores in his/her mouth? Really?

As for what provokes it - well, it is really hard to be two, have limited communication skills, little control over your life, and emotions that you can't figure out. I expect that your child upset the other child over something real or imaginary, and biting was the only way the other child had to deal with it in the moment. Very common.

I've never heard of tetanus being found in human saliva??

Unfortunately, I don't think there is any such thing as "just tetanus" any more in a shot. When I was first looking into it, our (then) pediatrician said I might be able to buy it directly from a pharmacy and they'd administer it, but at that time I couldn't locate any (around 2003/4). I think the simplest vax you can get is DT--Tetanus and Diptheria combos. I'm pretty sure that one of the DT's did or does have thimerosal in it, so be sure to read labels.

I checked with my Ped at out last visit if they could give a JUST tetanus shot, and she said yes. So either she is wrong, lying, or there is something. I guess I will find out when i jump to that side of the fence. I will admit I didn't think there was, but she said they could accomodate me.

tetanus

You can get a tetanus only shot but not until after the age of 7.

But your child is MUCH more likely to be struck by lightening than tetanus

I had to come to terms with tetanus first as I am allergic/reactive to that vax and don't feel comfortable giving it to my kids under any circumstances.

I know its strange that my first thought was Tetnus!

The girl who bit her is her buddy, they were playing, probably just fighting over toys. I'm glad it wasn't my child doing the biting!

She may have misunderstood your exact meaning when you said JUST tetanus, too. Or they may be able to get it. It may be available outside the US as well. I don't see the insert for any when I look around, though there is passing mention that it may exist..

I may be a tad paranoid, but for the mama who was considering just a tetanus shot, I would want to see the package/insert with my own two eyes. I wouldn't trust the nurse or whoever to not think she knows my needs better than me. JMO.
