making the bed larger?

What are ways I can make our bed larger? We have a queen, and I think the lack of space is really what led DS to 'wean' from our bed to his crib around 7 months - he just sleeps better with his own space. I'd like to bedshare longer with the new babe (due in March). I'd love to buy a king bed but it won't be in our budget. I thought about finding an extra-long twin and using a bed doubling 'belt' to add it to our queen.
Any other ideas?

first, id just like to say, buying our king size bed, to this day, was one of the best investments we have made.

but, if youre still not convinced.. you could side-car the crib. the length of our room is exactly the length of a king bed plus our crib, so we had no need to "attach" them, but they do sell, i believe, straps or something to attach. we also didnt need to go this until dd turned 16 months and decided she liked to sleep like the horizontal line in an " H "

we also considered buying a twin bed to attach

We used a twin and just smooshed it between ours and the wall. That way the size didn't really matter.

Of course, DS was 14mo at the time, so i wasn't worried about SIDS or anything. I suppose if you were doing it with a newborn, you would have to take any gapping into consideration.

going from one toddler to one toddler and a newborn, we got a king sized bed from a queen sized. (we actually got a near new one from freesource, but craigslist is another good source for those not too squeamish about a used bed.) then they grew into a preschooler and a toddler so we decided to transition them into their own room with their own bed (to share if they wanted, or split if they wanted, 2 twin beds). one of the twin sized winded up next to the king sized in our room. now expecting another and seriously considering investing in another twin sized, just in case.

to be honest, we have a massive big bedroom, and its become literally the "bed" room. and the other 2 bedrooms in our house are just places to play. i second the reconsideration of buying the king. we were in dire straits when ds2 was born and couldn't afford the new bed, so when we saw the one on freesource we pounced on it. it has been such a HUGE asset to our sleep quality and overall happiness... to be able to share a bed without feeling cramped up. to be able to move around a bit. adding the twin next to us has been even better! (on a side note, we very rarely get gapping, but we have everything underneath the mattresses firmly together and we put sheets and blankets over to make it more like all one bed. if that makes sense.)

we are in the same spot. a queen is just so small with a 1yr old and 2 parents. but a king seems pricey. I put a toddler matteress on the floor thinking dd could sleep there sometimes but she rolls off and hits her head. no good. lately i have been thinking we might buy a full size futon and put it on the floor to have her sleep there at the start of the night. the way it is she has to sleep right next to me touching- so if i stirs she does too.
