ECing boys

I am finding is challenging to put ds on the potty at times and have the pee end up in the potty! The first stream always catches me by surprises and I'll find I wasn't aiming well enough and so we'll end up with a bit of pee outside the potty.

But the most challenging one is trying to hold him over the potty and nurse him, since he likes to start nursing before he'll pee. I find this next to impossible to hold baby in a position that will allow the pee to go into the potty and try to keep him latched. So I'll sit on the side of the tub so that the pee can go into the tub, but he always ends up spraying himself, especially his feet/legs, when I do this. Less messy then the potty but I still don't love that I have to clean pee up off him, and sometimes me.

How did you manage to do this with a boy???? Tips/suggestions??? Ds is not quite 4 weeks, btw, so we are still very new at this...

I was a little worried about ECing a boy too, since my only experience was with a girl, but I find that as long as I make sure his penis is pointing down everything land in there just fine. Maybe if he'll only pee when he nurses you could just use a prefold to catch for a while until he gets the cue down? When I nurse at home I have a loose prefold and when I notice him peeing I just cue him and let the prefold catch it. Now, DS is 2 1/2 months old and things are WAY easier than when he was itty bitty. Doesn't seem much different than ECing a girl now.

I peed DS over/into the sink. It's big, and there is a mirror for me to see where it is/was going.

Also, don't be afraid to grab and point! I know, I didn't for a long while, but that is what guys do! I didn't do it early on, but once DS was sitting on a potty I sometimes did (then, usually one finger to point it down), and when they are older you can aim just like the big boys.

I hold and point. My son likes to wee standing up and I need to aim for him or he wees on his feet. I read hear about someone having a plastic bottle for their son to wee in whhile nursing. Since your son likes to nurse while weeing, perhaps you could try that?

I've thought about this, but haven't tried it yet. The nursing and peeing has been difficult for us, too, but now at 9 wks, ds seems to be ok peeing before or after. When I would try to nurse and pee, I used my sitz bath, but it was still tricky to get things aimed properly. I totally agree. I also had some success with using hte bblp and putting it on my lap, under him bum. It was tricky to get it positioned to be comfortable for both of us, but it has worked.

Now I usually try to pee him before we nurse and most times he does.
