Ergo compared to Beco?

Is there anyone that has tried both? Can you tell me the pros and cons of either? It seems like a lot of people really prefer the Ergo. I'd love to hear why. Thanks!

The biggest differences I found were

Ergo:

- straps connect sraight to body of carrier and there is no fabric between mom/baby. This makes it easy to get on.
- men like this one better because the colors etc., are quite plain
- can get an infant insert

Beco:

- Straps are connected to a Y peice of fabric between mom/baby which is hardly noticeable but allows you to put a younger baby on your back and also makes it easy for back wearing with new babywearers.
- uses designer fabrics and is quite pretty and unique, however, men don't always like this
- has adjustable straps with buckles from the body of the carrier to the straps. This allows you to pull baby in very snuggly without tightening it on your shoulders.
- comes with an infant insert

A little bit of history with me... I used the Ergo all of the time with my 3rd, loved it! But I did not like it with my 4th and now I'll use either my Beco or my Olives and Applesauce (O&A is my fave).

Hope that helps a little.

i've been torn between these two carriers as well. my little guy is six months old and i've been using a moby up until now, which has been fantastic. but i'd like to move on to something else that can more easily be worn on the back, and that doesn't have all the fabric to fiddle with.

ecstaticmama did one carrier work better than another for wearing on the back. the ergo always looks so droopy to me on the back. . .

Experience with old Beco...

I had an old Beco (not the newer butterfly design).
There used to be no fabric between baby/mom and I was able to walk/hike everywhere in it and nurse discreetly at the same time (I could move one strap off my arm to do this as he got bigger).
Having said that, I don't know about the new design of Beco.
I think the Ergo is closer to the design of what I had with the older Beco and I loved it for nursing on the go!
I think the newer one with fabric between baby/mom would make it harder to do...

i have the beco with the safety fabric and i love it for back carry.
i can completely disconnect the bottom and she cant fall out at all. very comforting for an active baby who tends to do crazy stuff while i try getting her on my back.
the only con is you cant bf in it, but never was an issue for me as she stopped nursing in the carrier right around 6 months when we switched from the moby.

i dont think i'm coordinated enough to get the ergo on my back without help, the beco really helps us busy spaced out mamas keep babies from falling on the ground.

It's just a different method to put them on your back. With the Beco, you put it on your front without snapping the chest straps, put baby in, then scoot babe to the back while holding the straps. There's a couple ways to do it but regardless you have to put baby in first then scoot (unless someone is helping you).

With the Ergo, you can do a hip scoot or just put it on (like a backwards apron) and toss babe back, lean forward and flip up the carrier. Does that make sense? lol.

The 4th Gen used to be more similar to the Ergo in terms of strap placement. Apparently Ergo had a patent put on the straps etc., and Beco had to change their design.

When I went to buy mine I was thinking of the beco but the saleslady convinced me of the ergo. I was intimidated by the idea of getting it on my back without baby being connected to the carrier but it took very little time to master it. As well, I'm, well, quite fluffy & she tole me the ergo would fit much better.

I used both with my DD. I loved the Beco until my DD was almost 2--the back is higher (and it's even better on the new Butterfly), it was much easier with a very small baby, and the infant insert is standard. With the Ergo, she really got lost in it as a little baby, they do have the infant insert but it's super bulky, and I didn't like how low the carrier was on her back.

Once she got bigger though, she started to complain that the Beco made her legs dangle and wasn't as comfortable as the Ergo. The Ergo has a much larger seat with darts, and so she rode in that comfortably until about 3 1/2--I could have never done that with the Beco since the seat is so much more narrow (and doesn't have the pocket created by the darts). Also, you can do a side carry with the Ergo (although, I never found it that comfy), but you can't with the Beco.

Basically, we ended up using them both a TON.

If business practices factor into it at all, the Beco is made in the U.S. and she has extremely good customer service. The Ergo is made in China and they have an attocious reputation for customer service.

I personally really like my Patapum. My son is bigger than most babies his age and it is still comfy to carry him. I can sit, cook, walk him in it. It takes some coordination to get him in the back facing position by myself but worth it!

I had an Ergo and I liked it but I LOVE my 4th Gen Beco. I like that the Beco goes up higher on the babe...but I don't know if I would like the butterfly. I don't know if that helped at all.
