Promethazine is a phenothiazine that is primarily used for nausea, vomiting and motion sickness. It has been used safely for years in adult and pediatric patients for vomiting, particularly associated with pregnancy. No data are available on the transfer of promethazine into milk, but small amounts probably do transfer. However, this product has been safely used in many pediatric conditions, and it is unlikely to produce untoward effects in "older" infants and children. Observe for sedation and apnea, particularly in younger infants. There are numerous suggestions that this product many increase the risk of SIDS. Do not use in infants subject to apnea. Long term followup(6 years) has bound no untoward effects on development.

Pregnancy Risk Category: C
Lactation Risk Category:L2
Pediatric Concerns: None reported via breastmilk, but promethazine has been implicated in SIDS. Some caution is recommended
