Here's what this website said:

There is no substitute for the pure flavor of miso. If you just need a small amount for a recipe try substituting sesame paste or tahini.
Louise Hagler, in her cookbook Miso Cookery, gives this conversion:
Quote:
1 T Light Miso = 1/4 tsp salt
1/2 T dark miso = 1/4 tsp salt

miso gives a really rich flavor but soy sauce will give a more complex "salty" flavor than just plain salt.

I've never used miso in mine and it turns out just fine. I typically use soy sauce or a can of cream of mushroom soup, depending on what sounds good at the time. I suppose maybe this isn't a traditional shep's pie but it still tastes great.

I have no idea what recipe you are using but mine never has any miso in it. What is the miso used for in the recipe? In the broth? I use vegan worchestershire sauce in my broth.

Ditto on the vegan Worcestershire sauce. My husband is from the UK and vegan so that is what they use.

well, i think "Shepard's Pie" may mean different things depending on where you're from. In New England (Maine) it's simple! I saute up "beeeeeef" crumbles then layer in a pie pan the crumbles, then corn and then mashed potatoes... bake thru. that's it. simple, comforting and delish!

I made this recipe and, as I recall, the miso is for the mashed potatoes. You can make the mashed potatoes the way that you normally would and I'm sure it would be fine.

One thing that I did learn in this recipe is that when it calls for 1/2 cup of water or broth, it means 1/2 cup. I sometimes find I need a little more water/broth when cooking vegetables. In this recipe I used a cup of broth and it came out very runny and even made my mashed potatoes runny, as well.

Also, my husband and I are fans of spices. We found the recipe by itself to be too bland. Don't hesitate to add whatever you would normally use in the way of spices.

Good luck.
