My babe just got a cold too. Every now and then I will suck some snot out with a bulb syringe but other then that I say just let it run it's course. If super congested and has a bad cough I say sitting in a bathroom full of hot steam will help aleviate some of the discomfort.
Hope your baby feels better soon.

Gavin is threatening to get one, too. He sounds a bit congested once in a while, but so far nothing more. My husband and my middle son have been sick for over a week. I also am just now starting to feel the tell-tale signs of it hitting me

The only other thing I would do with a newborn is maybe drip some expressed breastmilk in his nose, breastmilk has natural antibodies and anti-inflammatory properties in it, so it could help. Same reason why you put breastmilk in a clogged tear duct or pink eye or even an ear infection or diaper rash.

Here's hoping it's short lived!!!

Honestly it may not be a cold. It's very common for newborns to get stuffy /congested in the first few weeks of life. There is a really good section on this in the Dr. Sears Baby Book about this. Many times we think it's a cold, but it's really just there tiny nasal passages getting easily clogged. I can't find the article on-line but here is a little bit about it:

The book also talks about de-fuzzing baby's sleeping area since the smallest about of fuzz or lint can clog a newborn's nasal passages. I know my baby is also going through the stuffy nose/congestion. We just keep him upright, saline drops, suction, hot shower, vaporizer and dust our room like crazy. LOL Good luck mama!

Mabel got a cold (or not according to Dr. Sears), but she was really congested... what helped us was the nose suction thingy and saline drops to help break things up.

I started taking probiotics as well so help boost both our immune systems.

Best new thing for colds ever

I just had my 5th child and my sister gave me a nose frida. It is the best product ever. I will be giving one of these to every new mom I know. Does not grow mold like bulbs and way more suction when you need it (you control)
Cleans up great and works soooo well. I use saline spray as well to loosen when needed. here is the link

Poor baby guy We just use the nose sucker when we must (they all hate that thing, don't they?) and some nice hot steamy mommy and baby showers (or daddy and baby), and otherwise a lot of holding them upright....
Hope he kicks it quickly. Charlotte got one when she was really little too!
