Anyone seen "Where The Wildthings Are" yet?

DH wants to take very sensitive DS (3 3/4 yo) to see it as his first movie theater movie.

If it goes badly I almost certainly won't be able to get DS to go again for at least a year maybe more.

What did people think. Was it at all scary or violent?

I took ds, who is 6 years old, last night.

It is definitely NOT for younger children. In fact, it was even a bit too much for my 6 year old.

There is a lot of anger and angst in the film, in addition to a LOT of underlying adult themes.

Oh, and yes, there were definitely scary parts.

If your child is sensitive, no way! There are dark, scary parts and combine that with a dark theater with surround a sound and it is amplified scary! I almost had an anxiety attack during a certain scene where there was built up drama.

It's not for very sensitive children who have problems witnessing anger/ rage, tantrums, violence, etc.
My kids loved it, but we're a family of wild things.

OP, my kids would've been too young to see it at that age. They couldn't have made it through. We saw it today (dd is almost 8 and ds is 5.5), and everybody LOVED it! It's not a movie for really young kids.

I think we'll avoid it. Between what you guys are saying, and what I've read other places (like there is a part where a science teacher mentions how the sun will die, which would completely freak DS out) it sound like way too much for him. DH will be disappointed, but I'm sure we'll find an appropriate movie theater movie eventually.

Thanks everyone.

Hm, I already told my 4yo we could go see it. He's definitely not a "sensitive" kid, he doesn't scare easily, and he can handle witnessing strong emotions. Would it completely traumatize him if I took him?

I doubt it. It didn't traumatize my 2 year old.

Was it generally a good movie? DD wants to see it and so do I, but not sure if we should just wait for the DVD or not.

I think he'll be fine. I honestly can't even remember any scary parts.

MusicianDad, we all LOVED the movie. One of the best movies I've taken my kids to see.

I haven't seen it yet, but both my dc have.

DS 16 y.o. said he really enjoyed it and would see it again. Possibly, he's just trying to be nice and offering to see it with me, since he went without me . He said it was more intense than he expected.

DD 13 y.o. also liked it. She thought there were scary parts though - not frightening to her, but she questioned whether it would be too much for a little kid. She mentioned one scene in particular where one wild thing rips off the arm of another.

So there's the teen perspective, lol!

Hmm. I may have to rethink our plans to see it. I think my kids would be bothered -- especially the part about the sun dying. My DS has anxiety issues.

Don't know if it's comparable, but...

If a 5 yo really enjoyed and wasn't freaked out by the newest Harry Potter, do you think he would have a problem with WTWTA?

Yes! There were several younger children in the theater who were crying!! (My kids are 7 and 12; they were ok, although the 7 yo. was a little scared.)

It seriously should be re-titled "Max's schizophrenia." It was that bad.
It managed to be completely disturbing AND boring at the same time. Dh slept through it. This is NOT worth your money, and we had really been looking forward to it. We all walked out of the theater in a bad mood. It's very anti-climactic, as well.

My 12 yo. daughter's review: "It sucked."

HappilyEvrAfter: Harry Potter was so much more interesting and actually less scary.

Oh, and the teacher mentions more than just that. He mentions war, global warming, pollution, and other things for kids to worry about.

Darn, I love the book. I just think it would be too much for my DS.

Hrm. I was going to take my two little wild things (4.5 and almost 7) to see it. Their dad and I recently divorced, and we are huge Maurice Sendak fans, so I thought it might be good, if not a bit difficult, for us to see.

Only a little bit of the movie deals with divorce, and not in a positive way.

We just saw it tonight, and my not-at-all-sensitive kids loved it. It was better than I'd expected, if a little slow. Both my mom and I cried at the end . . . the kids did not (though they have both cried at other movies).
