? about making a tie quilt

I want to make dd2 a tie quilt for Christmas. This is going to be a very simple endeavor with just 2 pieces of flannel and some batting in between and I plan to tie it with some yarn. My question is, about how far apart should I space the ties?

I made a bow-tie quilt and tied at the connecting corners. About a hands-width apart. I'd say you could make them as close or far as you like as long as they hold the pieces together. Say, 3"-6"? You could use the ties to create a pattern maybe? (I used a blanket as my batting...cheaper and I hated the blanket. Made a great batting.)
