that apples have spoiled if they don't look it?

i have some apples left over from, oh, atleast a month ago if not more but they've been in the fridge ever since. they look outwardly okay, but dh tried eating one the other day and it tasted off (altho not mouldy or anything). do you think these apples would be good for baking and/or making apple sauce? can that apple sauce (if made) be fed to an infant as first food?

tia!

If they are not moldy or rotten then they are fine. I think using them in baked goods or applesauce sounds like a great idea
I don't know about first foods, but applesauce was definitely something we fed to my baby brother... I'm sure someone else will know better!

Apples will wither, or they'll ferment or they'll turn brown and rot. All of those are fairly obvious. Beyond that, if it tasted "odd"... apples will go mealy, which is more about texture than taste, or they can absorb other flavors. But with both of those, the apple itself is still good to eat.

Yeah. We keep apples for months here-- I have forty pounds of them in my cellar right now. By the end of the winter, they are sometimes withered a bit due to dehydration, and we do lose a few to ferment or rot. But if the apple isn't rotten and smells normal, it's fine to eat, even if the texture's gone off a bit.

With an infant-- I would check very carefully for mold or rot, and then feel entirely confident serving them to baby.
