If you left the family bed to nightwean, when and how was the transistion back?

We are partially nightweaning our 16 month old twins. It's only been about 5 nights but they have gone from nursing many, many times to only once or twice. Dh sleeps with them and I have moved into the bottom of ds1's bunk bed across the hall. I walk over once or twice and nurse them when dh can't get them back to sleep. It has been very non-traumatic for the babies and aside from dd crying for 2-3 minutes when dh first takes her into the bedroom to go to sleep there has been no real upset.

I'm just wondering how and when I will get back into the family bed. I can't wait to snuggle up to them again although I can't say I miss the all night nurse-a-thons.

For my DS (#1) we nightweaned by my leaving the family bed. He was about 24 mo.

The thing we did differently was that if he wanted to nurse at night he had to come to me and then return to the bed when he was done. By the third night he had decided that it wasn't worth it and stopped waking up at night. Freaking amazing since I was nightweaning due to the fact that he was still nursing 7-10x a night!

On the fourth night DH got called into an overnight work emergency and I had to return to the family bed. I was sure that it was too soon and would blow the whole thing, but it didn't! We never went back to night nursing.

With DD we were traveling full time and I couldn't go to a different bed, so I just told her (at about 24 mo) that I was tired and didn't want to nurse at night anymore. I (and my breasts) wanted to sleep at night, just like Daddy, DS, the doggies, the sun, etc. She cried two or three times for about 45 -60 seconds during the process, but that was it. I waited a few months longer to remove the nursing at bedtime. She still got to nurse for a few minutes before I said I was ready to turn over to go to sleep for the night.
