Okay, I have a confession.
I made these quilty diapers and I absolutely LOVE them. I think they are very cute, I made 54, lost one body of the other so down to 53, and have 32 completed so far. I kept 21 for my 22mo old son, 4 are put away for the girl baby, and the other 7 are for testers. I made a One Size without all the snaps in the front. They are quilted cutely, and for absorbancy. They have 2 inserts in M and L. I am serging in black the other 21 now.
I LOVE my diapers, but I am HATING my wash routine. And, with all the talk, I realized what my problem was all those times I was using fitteds, also made by me. But, the body of these, aren't as thick as the others. They bunch up for the smaller sizes when adjusted, needing less layers in the crotch, and the quilting helps them be more absorbant.
And, these were diapers I planned to test and sell (not spamming, just explaining why I am so
), because I thought I had thought of everything, put everything in there that I LOVE in a diaper *cuteness factor is a biggie for me lol*.
So, this is the issue. I have a FLer. I think that says it all. I didn't realize that it was the WASHER all this time, since we had moved to FLers. I could never figure out why my diapers still smelled after sanitizing and double rinsing, using baking soda, soap, and vinegar. I used to think that the slight stink was par for the course, was covered up by the fleece covers, and we would go back to sposies when Dh couldn't stand it anymore.
After using these diapers ONE time, and doing the recommended delicate cycle on cold, and then doing the sanitize cycle with all the buttons pushed (prewash, extra hot with soap, and double rinse), they still came out stinking!! I blamed the 2nd time on Dh leaving a poopy unrinsed diaper in there and not telling me about it. And, the washer is NOT overloaded. Even when my kid will overload the washer with regular clothes, they always come out clean.
So, I cured the problem. Now, I use a whole delicate cycle with vinegar. I then, do the sanitize cycle with laundry soap and Oxyclean, and then I do a whole gentle cycle with or without vinegar. This is over 3.5 hrs of using the washer for one load of diapers and then 1.5 hrs dry time, if I keep on top of it. This is for ONE toddler (shells and doublers) and a couple nighttime pullups, and a few fleece covers and longies when we use them. And, he doesn't even use that many diapers. I can do this load every other day plus a few hours, while I have to have the other diapers to use while these are washing and drying FOREVER. Too cold to line dry now. Once the pail is full, I have to wash anyway, so as to not overload the washer. And, I have to get the rest of these diapers done so I have more to use.
When the new baby comes, I will use the NBs I made, but they are prefitteds, and I think they are trimmer and will be easier to wash, not being made of all flannel. But, once the baby hits 10lbs, I planned to use these OS diapers for both of them. So, that means a 5 hr load EVERY DAY. On top of clothes for 9 other people.
I think if I had a top loader, I would use the same amount of water in the end. But, I could get them done quicker. So, I am thinking about getting one for my hookup in the basement as one option. But, if I take my diapers down there, I may never see them again. Doing my clothes down there seems counterproductive. Although, certainly my teen son could do his clothes and my DH's uniforms down there. But, the TLers aren't economical when it comes to clothes. And, we have the newer improved FLer, and it isn't that old.
So, this is also what I am thinking. Sell all these on a FSOT to those who have TLers (and can get them cleaner faster), and don't have 10 ppl in one house. And start from scratch, by just embellishing PFs, since PF fabrics are easier to get the smell out, and to get rinsed easier. Would making PFs into prefitteds cause the same problem with washing? Or would the fabric that is in the PFs make a big difference? Still have the fitted (although in sized), but the plus of PF fabric that washes and dries quicker? If I embellish the PFs, I can still quilt cute things into them, but again, with PF fabric.
I really LOVE my diapers though.
I have taken so many more pics of this kid than any previous, because I just think they are too cute, and I worked so hard on them. He doesn't require a cover, because he isn't a heavy wetter and just the large pad is enough even at 22 mos. He can use his baby legs if he is cool (which he never is, but nonetheless). They are pretty trim anyway. They are super soft. And, I really like the one size thing.
I have another idea to get what I want, but I really need to rethink the wash routine before I start making nearly 5 dozen diapers. I told my DH about my dilemma, and I am sure he isn't impressed. I just didn't catch on that fitteds have this issue with FLers.
Any ideas? Please don't say PFs and covers. I HATE PUL. I am so done with the fleece covers all the time too. He is easily overheated, and I have to keep it just cotton. I don't know that he would or could wear wool at all, although I have entertained the idea for the new baby. If I use PFs exclusively (and I really want to use one type of diaper), then I will be the only one changing diapers on two babies FT.
I do have cotton knit to try and make these same types of diapers with that. Is that easier to get the stink out? Knit is so much more expensive, so I thought I would do the flannel. We even have trouble getting our towels to come out smelling okay with our FLer, so terry for a large diaper would be out of the question. I think the few NB diapers I made will be okay.
Any insights would be great. Calculating cost (although I don't do CDs for savings), I would still save money even with all the washing, but the time. I am having issue with the time. Kymberli

, and on the way back home, he had me picking up things to set up the w/d in the bathroom. We have them in the kitchen currently, because that was where I wanted them. So, I asked him about the TLer and I thought that was going in the bathroom. He wants the laundry set for clothes, the clothes, the diaper pails, and the soaps and such in the bathroom. He is leaving the hookups in the kitchen for the TLer, when we get one. We DEF need it before Dec. And, so I will have to drag the pail to the kitchen, wash the diapers, drag them to the dryer in bathroom, and then clean into the livingroom. That is fine with me. But, it was going to be dragging them into the kitchen instead to be dried. Doesn't matter to me. I just don't want to be dragging them to the laundromat!!
