Alfie Kohn's Unconditional Parenting. Not sure of the scope and tone you'd like, but he cites sources as well. There's a thread in either here in Gentle Discipline or Finding Your Tribe, I think.

I'm planning to write term paper on punishment and its effect, so if anyone knows of any good psychology books on the topic that'll be great. I'll check my library today.

I've read UP by Alfie Kohn few months ago, will have to reread it, I'm sure I'll find lots of helpful information in his book.
It is important that everything I write in my paper its supported by research so the more professional the book the better.

I like Teaching children self-discipline by Thomas Gordon. He talks a lot about punishment and its effect on children

Try having a look at the books by Alice Miller - she is a German psychoanalyst who has written some very interesting books on the effects of traditional forms of punishment and child rearing on children. In particular "For your own good: hidden cruelty in child-rearing and the roots of violence."
