Spindle boxes, at home

I have been hesitant to get spindle boxes for my son. He will be three in a month, and is very interested in numbers...so I'm starting to gather some of the earlier math supplies. (I'm using www.infomontessori.com and a host of books to inform me of the presentations and materials.)

My hesitation with the spindle boxes is that I'm 99% sure that anything that looks like a drumstick in our house will get used as a drumstick. We have a set of drums in the room where he has his Montessori works, and he has plenty of drumsticks.

Anyhow, I'm contemplating getting this sorting tray to label 0 - 9 and use something smaller, and less shaped like a drumstick to use.

Or, it's my understanding that the spindle boxes are used to discover the concept of zero and to show quantity. I know we can play the zero game, and I've found this book. Are there other games/materials that can be used for this purpose.

Or...would it be better to tackle working on his self control with the drumstick look-alikes?

What about using a tray with straws...or even q-tips. Don't laugh. I've seen someone do that before online with an "water bottle sized" ice cube tray. It was kinda cool.

That's a fantastic tip!

They have some that have ten compartments! That's perfect! Thank you!
