Lack of number recognition at 6.5 yrs - Page 2

During our evaluation, it was apparent that she has no problem in copying, in fact she was above average on that. The dev. ped. did think that she has a problem with decoding though and that even though she can pick out every 7 on a page full of numbers, she's not accurately processing what it is she is copying. So, perhaps a visual processing problem. Auditory processing cannot be tested for or diagnosed until after she turns 7 years old. And we were given a referral for further testing on the visual processing as well as the decoding issues and her gifted areas, but the wait is 4-5 months, so we won't be seeing that specialist until spring. Our optometrist said he'd be happy to give us a referral for visual processing and vision therapy if our diagnosis with these other people led to needing that. So, we're in the process of trying to get help, but it's a very slow process. For now, I'm trying to figure out what I can do to help her.

I do really appreciate all the suggestions. We do have the Leap Frog video, but I haven't pulled it out in a really long time, so maybe I'll do that again soon. Thanks for the reminder! And I'm also seriously looking into the Enki curriculum since I think the sensory integration stuff and all the artwork and storywork would be priceless for her (probably great for any child, but better for some and she's one that would totally thrive with it I think). Just trying to figure a way to afford it right now.

My ds sounds "sort of" like your dd. He is gifted, though appears to have some sort of math/numbers problem. We've been told he is a VSL (right brain dominant learner), w/ a possible math LD.
Anyway, have you looked into Diane Craft's website? We just ordered her number cards-and are considering ordering her dvds.
Someone from my hs group suggested her site-it looks good, and once you google in "visual-spatial learners", you get a whole lot of info!
I am thinking back to your dd's age-and I would say that that is exactly where our ds was. He's made very little progress since, as I 've not pushed it, just thinking until recently, that it was more of a developmental issue.
PM me if you want!

Emma, my MIL *just* asked me the same thing, if I had looked at Diane Craft's website. And I have not. Just thought it was interesting that you mentioned it. MIL sent me the website link ages ago, probably 6 or 8 months ago, but I never really looked at it. I'll definitely make a point to go to her website soon.

One thing that came to mind is for the numbers over ten, using the Asian (and Arabic and many other languages) way of counting. So rather then saying 15... say one ten five. Rather then saying twenty...say two-tens. Of course, I'd wait until after she knows the first 9 numbers. (This is how Right Start does math...and I think it really helps... especially when trying to get adding larger numbers.)

Somebody mentioned Leap Frog DVDs.. math circus is good but the newer one (get ready for school) is even better for numbers IMHO. There's a really great counting song in it. http://www.amazon.com/LeapFrog-Lets-.../dp/B002BJGYJO I got it for $6.00 at Costco.

I tried this!
But...it didn't help much. My ds had used MUS, and they also used this type of naming)...it only confused my ds more. *I* really like Right Start math-but it's just not a good fit for our ds. (I think?) I'm so confused!!

Our ds has the counting down, it's addition, etc. that he has problems with.

Our number cards still didn't come today.

OP-it's interesting that you knew who I was talking about. When I spoke with Diane, she made it sound like our ds would be fine with the number cards-not even needing the dvds. We'll see, I guess!

I'll let you know when we get them, and how much they clicked or not..

I just opened my package from DC, containing the "number" cards. I am so disappointed. They are cheap quality cards that contain-just 1-9, with little stories on the back of each card. Me bad, but I was expecting *addition* -type flash cards. I guess maybe I'll try to make my own?

I can see how these would be great if your dc isn't able to recognize 1-9, though.

Just thought I'd give ya the fyi...

Thanks for letting me know. I did go and look at her website and considered ordering the flashcards. Good to hear what you think of them! It looks like we'll get in for our next evaluation in early December instead of next spring, so at the moment, I'm holding out hope that they'll be able to offer some good tips and maybe some of the reasons that her brain is having so much trouble accessing this information.
