Is it possible your diapers are repelling?

I've heard this can happen if you use the wrong detergent (buildup of brighteners, etc. on the dipes) or use diaper rash cream (good when it forms a water-repellent barrier on your baby's skin, not so good when it forms a water-repellent barrier on your diapers).

Supposedly you can 'strip' them to fix this (I think it involves washing them with dishwashing liquid) but I'm a cloth-diapering noob too so I don't know much more. I just thought I'd mention the possibility.

I think you should definitely try another cover, whether you stay with PF or not. Fleece does not work well on little babies because they are pressing against the fleece all the time and the pee soaks through the fleece and onto their clothes, blankets, and you. When they can sit, crawl, walk - fleece works better because the diaper gets wet, but it has time to slowly evaporate through the fleece. The pressure of the baby laying down is letting the wetness get through.

I know someone who loved her prefolds once she switched to plastic pants.

You probably did this, but I just wanted to clarify. You should *wash*dry*wash*dry*wash*dry*wash*dry*wash*dry* to prep not just wash 5 times. And ditto for a water proof cover, the dappi pull on nylon pants are a great alternative to PUL and cheap!

What temp are you washing those PFs with? They really need to go through the hottest wash you can do to break down the oils. My Bummis PFs are the newest - unbleached - and I washed them 5 times on HOT before using them the first time and I know they're still not up to full absorbency.

At a guess, I'd say it's probably not the dipes that are failing, it's the cover. Your clothes should not be feeling wet if the cover is doing it's job.

Do you make sure to point your little guy south when you put his dipe on? If you leave him pointing north, there's not a lot of dipe there to catch it all. You also may need to make sure you're getting a good solid fit around the legs before you Snappi it. I know half the time I have to Snappi my little guy twice to get it right, he's squirming so much.

I'm in your DDC, my little guy is only 2 days older than yours... I have mostly fitteds, and I'll say very few are any more absorbant than my PFs. I have UtN and Bummi PFs, and mostly use wool. For nighttime dipes I use Happy Hempys with a Babykicks stuffer and a fleece liner and an Imse Vimse PUL cover or a Sweet Peas AI2 with an extra hemp doubler and a fleece liner. They're both incredibly bulky on my little guy, but I only have to change him once during the night, and the bed stays dry. But by changing time the dipe is sopping wet.

About half my dipes can't hold more than maybe 2 pees (and I have a few that can only hold one)... and my guy does 2 pees in an hour. The only exception to that (other than the nighttime dipes) are the Dream Eze and the SNB Etc (which is a defunct HC shop).

Honestly though, if I had found them sooner, I would have gone entirely with the Sweet Peas. They're expensive, but super absorbent.

This is ridiculous. I washed them 7 more times this weekend on hot. 45 minutes after changing him into a prefold with a Prorap laminated cover...leak leak leak! Well, whatever, they are now on diaperswappers and I am pricing bumGeniuses.
