Is it okay to take medicine to treat or prevent 2009 H1N1 flu while breastfeeding?

Yes. Mothers who are breastfeeding and taking medicine to treat flu because they are sick should express their breast milk for bottle feedings, which can be given to your baby by someone who is not sick.

What??? Is this the general guideline for when a nursing mother is sick - express your milk and have someone else care for / feed your baby the expressed milk?

That just doesn't sound like anything else I've ever read about being sick and nursing.

This sounds silly to me. When I was sick last year, the last thing I would have wanted was to sit around pumping breastmilk. DH would bring in DS, plop him on the bed next to me to nurse and then take him away to let me sleep. What baby is going to leave Momma alone just because she is doesn't feel well?

I don't think it's about leaving mama alone so much as limiting the baby's exposure.

But I still think it's ridiculous. I had a horrible vomiting/diarrhea flu when dd was about 4 months old. Dh had to work, so my mama had me come to her house and sleep in the guest bedroom. She took care of dd and brought her in for nursing. Dd didn't get sick; and neither did my mama.

I totally agree about pumping while sick; yuck!
