how do you read in bed?

We cosleep and ds goes to bed before dp and I. Dp and I read in bed, typically dp reads aloud to me that is one of the first things we started doing 9 years ago in our relationship and we really don't want to loose it.

We started reading NCSS for toddlers (ds is 2) and everything is about having the room super dark.

So if you have your room dark, how do you read in bed? Do folks use book lights? Just bedside lights? recommendations?

We use head lamps - sort of like a miner's lamp. Looks dorky but works great! The ones we have can be switched to a white light or a red light. I like the red light - it's softer and has never disturbed my sleeping co-sleepers.

Could you roll out of bed after your DS is asleep and then read in another room? We don't turn any light's back on after DD goes to sleep, but we often get back up.

I have a dimmer on my nightstand light and once she is asleep and I get up to brush teeth, finish up for the night I can usually go back in and turn it on dim enough not to disturb her but bright enough that I can see. I tend to just read in another room rather than chance it and I am pretty sure reading out loud wouldn't work since I am single and she would wonder who I am talking to!

Well, my DD actually doesn't fall asleep well if the room is super dark!

But I cannot read with super bright lights anyway; too blaring on my nighttime sense. So We have a nightstand light that is adjustable and when DD is falling asleep I tilt in down so its a very soft, dim glow. And after she falls asleep, I tilt it back up to read.

I also have a booklight that I use if DP is sleeping too. I got it at Barnes & Noble, I think, and its very small and lightweight and has a nice adjustable LED bulb. As soon as DD wakes up from her nap, I'll grab it and see what model it is. Its my absolute favorite booklight and I've tried maybe 15-20?

I know, I have bad luck with booklights too.

It maybe have something to do with the fact that I read a book every couple of days, so they're very well used!

It does illuminate the whole page. Both of them. And so far, I haven't had any drooping problems. We'll see how it goes though!

I just ran across them on Amazon for $5, so it may be worth picking one up and trying it.

We use headlamps on red, too.

I am the only bedtime reader, and so am "allowed" to read only on my iPhone at night while the rest of the room is dark.

I use a flashlight. I either cover it with a colored sock to dim the light, or tuck it under the sheet or my shirt. If it's on full strength, my DD and DH wake up.

Another headlamp user here.

We use Mighty Brites. the ones we have get dim very quickly. looking for another option.

The Kindle App for the iPod.

I wouldn't be able to read otherwise. Booklights and headlamps distracted DD too much. The book itself does too. I could never turn a page without waking her up.

Headlamp! Those things are the best. Got mine at REI. It's great to have free hands.

I also use the kindle app for my iphone and LOVE it. I can either dim the brightness and/or turn the background to black and the text to white - which doesn't bother DH or DS. When my eyes get super heavy and I am almost out, I can earmark the page with a touch of my finger and pass out.

I use a flashlight, but I think I'm going to try some of these other options!

I just turn on the bedside lamp. Once dh & ds are asleep nothing seems to bother them. It's the getting to sleep that is our issue!
