Clipping my poodle

So, our poodle (who is a miniature - I think that is the right one - and yet 2x the size of his parents - apparently the whole litter ended up 2x a large!) has crazy curly, frizzy, very easily matted hair that is impossible to groom (I don't have the money to pay for grooming every month or even every 2 months so we do it at home). I have to use scissors and it takes 4+ hours over 2 days (he is extremely cooperative with me, but I have to break it up for him ... I can't make him sit through that!). So, I want to get some clippers that will hopefully cut his hair (we do a "puppy dog" cut on him ... short and sweet!). I am looking at the Andis Pro Animal Clipper or the Oster A5. Does anyone have any experience with either of these, especially when it comes to cutting very curly, very thick, very frizzy poodle hair? Or, any ideas of a different clipper that would work? I don't mind spending $100-$200 upfront for clippers that will last for a long time and save me countless time and "emergency" grooming trips because his hair is out of control.

I have an andis set, though I bought them like 10 year ago.

I would check out pricing at some vet supply companies as well, KV vet supply was originally where I purchased mine. Most definitely investing up front is a wise idea when you're going to be clippping so regularly.

I'd ask some dog people though, I'm a cat person (persians) and I don't clip down as regularly as you would, also cat hair is quite fine in comparison.

I've used, and seen vets use, regular human clippers. Most types asren't going to cut skin, which is the important thing. If you get a set marked specifically for pets, then you're in the realm of being charged more for "specialty" clippers that often are no different at all than regular ones.

Hi there. I'm a vet, and we use the Andis AGC 2-Speed in the hospital where I work currently. They hold up really well to all sorts of haircoats.

Here is a link to a site that sells to groomers and vets. If they won't let you order without a vet license number, just let me know and you can use my account. They tend to be cheaper through that site when you consider that it comes with the blade (a #10 or a #40, can't remember which).

i use people clippers on my toy poodle. the hair on her legs and belly is soft and slightly curly but her back, head and ears are really wiry. i think my set was about $20 at walmart. just be sure you clean them thoroughly after each use and for sure oil the plates as you go so they dont pull his hair.

and a side note from experience...if you should happen to use said clippers on your children as well, dont tell a soul!!! LOL gee, people are SO judgemental!
