doperidome vs. reglan

Are they equally effective minus the side effects of reglan?

How much dopeidome are you supposed to take?

I'm thinking of doing one or the other - I assume you can't get it in the U.S.? If doperidome is better, but they both work, I may ask for a prescription of reglan while I wait for the doperidome to arrive.....

thoughts?

Oh -and can you take fenugreek and goats rue WITH one of the above prescriptions???

Thanks ladies.

I don't know the effectiveness of Reglan, only about the side effects. However my midwife did prescribe it to me to take for 2 weeks (I chose not to take it). I have had good luck on 160 mg of domperidone (the max dose) and no side effects. It is fine to take herbs along with dom (I would assume with reglan as well but don't know for sure). I am taking fenugreek and goats rue too. Best of luck!

There some reliable information on both drugs here, including dosage, from the Breastfeeding Network in the UK:

Reglan has terrible side effects. I took it from 2wks-5wks after DD was born and started having anxiety attacks and PPD. I would break out in tears if the phone rang. It was crazy. I was completely normal by 2 days after stopping. I switched to domperidone and have had NO problems, and my supply went higher.

I'd order the dom ASAP and nurse nurse nurse until it comes in. If your baby isn't gaining, I'd supplement (after nursing) until the dom comes.

You take 9 pills/day. You can take fenugreek, but it probably won't be needed.

i take 40-mg 3x a day. tried less but didn't work. no side effects- just milk. and i can tell if i miss a dose. we've been pumping since april. spent a lot of time in the nicu, and milk just never really caught up. she's on formula at the sitter's house and then milk at home (unless we're having an off day and there's not enough).

she is 6.5 mo (4.5 adjusted) and eats 4oz a feed. The dom has helped me to keep up with her, and that's with a super busy daytime job that is 14+hours and only allows me to pump 3-4 times a day.

i highly recommend dom if you need it. inhouse pharmacy has it for something like .13 a pill. Way cheaper than buying it in the US. I did get a prescription, but the internet site doesn't require it.

my ob wouldn't prescribe- i had to have the LC at the hospital write it. it was nearly $1 a pill. just can't afford that.

I used domperidone, fenugreek and blessed thistle with my last child. It was very helpful. I did 40mg 4 times a day which I think is the max.

I know it's not quite what you're asking, but honestly I would never ever consider taking Reglan. I've heard of people ending up in the hospital because of it - for the truly horrible mental side-effects. Plus, as I recall, you can only take it for a few weeks. Then what? I would just wait for the dom. I don't think it's worth taking the risk.

Make sure you scroll all the way down for tons more links about dom in particular, as well as more cautionaries about Reglan.

I just saw a commercial on tv asking for participants in a class action lawsuit for people who took reglan and developed permanent tardive dyskinisia! So scary!
