what would you recommend for a newborn? What did/do you prefer, which one was easier to use?

ps: I already have a ring sling.
TIA

I am also wondering this. I was given a pouch sling and I am not sure whether or not it is the best choice. But wraps scare me because I'm afraid I won't tie them right.

I voted wrap. They're so versatile and easy to nurse in, and you don't have to worry about having the perfect size. There is a learning curve, but the good thing is you only have to learn one carry to get a lot of use out of it.

the main reason I hesitate to recommend a pouch for a newborn is that mama's size will fluctuate widely- changing pp shape, milk coming in/engorgement, weight loss, etc and getting the right size of pouch is crucial for use w/ a newborn IMO.
wraps do have a bit more of a learning curve but are soooo versatile and you really can't miss with a stretchy for a nb.

wow, Claire, that's a great link! I realized I made some mistakes when wearing dd in my ring sling.

DS 1 lived in his ring sling. DS 2 lives in his moby. *shrug* I can nurse better in a RS. I don't bother with pouches- my size changes, and I haven't found one that fits well.

That said, after having the most recent baby and a Moby, I wouldn't be without the stretchy wrap again.

You already have a ring sling, so for sure a wrap!

I like to think of a basic sling wardrobe as the Chinese menu approach, i.e. one from column A, one-shoulder carriers like ring slings and pouches, and one from column B, two-shoulder carriers like mei tais/Asian baby carriers, wraps, and SSCs. With one of each category, your basic options and carrying positions are well-covered.

So I'd vote wrap.

Now, that doesn't answer which type of wrap.....a stretchy wrap is a lot easier to learn to use IMO than a woven wrap, but isn't going to last as long. A woven wrap definitely has a higher learning curve, and depending on your needs and comfort level might not be what you want to deal with for a newborn, but has more versatility if you put the practice into it in the long run.

I personally found the learning curve with my woven wrap to be much easier/quicker (smaller?) than my maya wrap ring sling. I sold the latter when I got my first wrap!

So I say that depends on the person. But I vote wrap every time!

I find pouches/slings awkward at any age.

I also love my wraps!

I got my sleepy wrap!

this thing is amazing! Dd fell asleep instantly when I put her in the wrap!
I think I wrapped it pretty tight, but after 1h of wearing her, I feel she's not staying as snug as at the beginning. Am I doing something wrong?

TIA and thanks for answering my poll!

i voted wrap. i had a moby and it did "give" a little bit and needed to be re-wraped sometimes, but we could go for a pretty long time. i've heard that other versions stretch too much (for some people's preferences) and they have to re-wrap pretty often. i had to move to a more structured carrier when my kiddo hit 20 lbs...there was just too much sag for me. Good luck, the moby is awesome!

Pouch, took us 3 months before Lina was willing to wait for the wrap to go on. I never ever ever got the newborn wrap (where you tie them on while you nurse) to work.

With the pouch, the key was to have a folded hand towel under her head and to walk around a bit right after putting her in.

My daughter's a sit-up kind of baby...she spits up a lot so sitting up is better anyway. But she also LOVES her wrap. She doesn't like laying down in our ring sling so I'm guessing she'd feel the same about a pouch. Had a Native Baby Carrier with DD1 and I liked it okay, but nothing beats a wrap (Sleepy Wrap).

thanks for responding. I'll definitely want to try a pouch later, they look so awesome and I've heard they're good for toddlers too.

I love babywearing, I want to try all kinds of carriers.
