Hi. I just saw this thread linked to the UU thread. We use Spirit Play in our church. At first, I thought it was a waste of time and would send teachers running for their lives. I went through training and thought I could never be a storyteller...it looked too hard. I'm on the RE committee and ended up having to be an emergency spirit play storyteller one day and got to experience it for myself. The kids loved it. Even the hyper ones. They felt that the class was thiers. They loved the rugs, the activities. They pulled out the old stories and retold them over and over again and then folded them up and put them away. We cut any stories out that were too Christiian for us and we changed some words. The stories are good, storytelling is pretty easy once the kids understand how it goes, the church had fun making the baskets and came up with some great props to put into the baskets.
What I don't like is that there's no integrated play in it. The kids CAN, but they usually choose not to. They really respect each other's space in the class and do their own work in their space.
So, for our church, it's going well.
