Mandatory circumcision and 1973 court case - Page 2

My brother was circumcised automatically back in the 60s in the midwest (where apparently the highest rates were/are). Anyhow, she was absolutely horrified. The nurses had been changing the diapers the whole time, and it wasn't until she was leaving that they informed him he had an infection and she saw it for the first time.

And, absolutely horrified too after she saw it as my late father was intact as well.

She never told my brother, they didn't want him to feel 'weird'. And, my brother never knew that Dad was intact either. So much for that 'psychological' son must be like father myth.

But, what was really sad was when my mom told me about the story I could see the pain. There was like a level of sad detatchment in her voice, and she told me that everybody sort of ganged up on her to reassure her that it was OK. It sounded to me like they really dismissed her feelings.

Now, because of that hospital I have two circumcised nephews...my mom apparently asked my SIL about it after they were born (brother is a decade older that I am and I didn't know about this stuff back then) and SIL said she was only doing it because my brother wanted them to match that she was fine with not circumcising. Grr... to the whole situation.

It was appalling overall because they treated me badly because they thought I was an unwed teen. I don't care if someone IS an unwed teen having a baby, it's not ok to treat them differently, but it was especially ironic because I was 21 and married. But I looked very young and didn't take my husband's name. So I got a lot of the attitude that I can only imagine they reserve for unwed teens. And that's why I had a homebirth for the next one and I got even WORSE treatment when DD had to be transported there after she was born...like HELLO!, I only had her at home because you guys were just so horrible to me the first time!

the hospital my husband was born in told his mother that it was mandatory. I am sure she would have probably done it anyways and it was a lie then, but people simply don't question authority very often.

Here with my son I never even got asked, the hospital doesn't do them anymore. You have to set up an appt with a pediatrician to get it done. I still made my husband go with my son anytime they took him out of the room though, I was not taking any chances.

I bet the dr that came into your room in the middle of the night had just finished a delivery and didn't want to come back the next day just for a circ. Of course, if this is the same dr you told him that you weren't circing, then my theory is completely wrong.

Oh, it gets better. This is how our doc (at the time) asked it:

"When are we going to do the circumcision?" (Not even an "are you" -type question.)

We responded, "We're NOT cutting him!"

I am German, but my 2 younger sons (2000 and 2003) were born in Michigan. Thankfully, I was aware of this topic (mainly due to "Mothering") back then - I told the ped that I didn't want this procedure done and had it written in their papers. (It wasn't an issue right after birth, all my children were born at home.)
Without "Mothering", I probably wouldn't have been aware of this "routine surgery" - there is no such thing as routine circumcision in Germany.
