6 days...still not producing enough milk? help please!

Hello,
I'm hoping for some advice on bfeeding since it's been 6 days since my dd was born, and I don't have enough milk to give her without supplementing. Here is the lowdown on her birth, maybe you can see a correlation b/w the milk supply and my condition?

DD3 born at 37w2days via c-section due to pre-eclampsia, I was on mag-sulfate for 24 hours, lost a significant amount of blood and needed 3 transfusions (hemoglobin down to 7.1). Also a CAT scan shows a large (15 x 10 cm) hematoma under the abdominal wall. I think I have a UTI as well now as it really burns when I urinate...I go back to the OB on Monday. I'm taking 800 mg./day Ibuprofen and hydrocodone as needed.

I'm pumping every 3 hours, not even concerned at the moment about her latching on, I just want to establish supply. I rented a Medela Symphony from the hospital and pump for 25-30 minutes and get *maybe* 30mls from both breasts combined. We give this to her and follow up with forumla (about 45mls total).

Any correlation? My breasts are not leaking, warm, they are not engorged, just a regular shape and size. I'm drinking, eating, napping...not sure what else I can do. Any help would be really appreciated!

i never leak or feel warm or engorged. also never got much from pumping. my babies thrive. why do you think you don't have enough milk?

Will baby not latch? Some women just can't pump - their breasts have milk but the pump can't get it out.

If you are able to feed baby at the breast with a small feeding tube baby will get your milk, stimulate your supply, and get any supplement needed.

There are a couple of case studies where mag sulfate was blamed for late (LATE) milk coming in. The more given the later the milk in those cases. Also, in rare cases extreme blood loss can cause Sheehan's syndrome, which results in supply issues.

Congrats on your baby and I hope you are feeling better soon!

My first thought was that you should pump more than every 3 hours. My DS, especially as a newborn, was nursing at least every hour.

it sounds like you have been through a lot. I hope some other mamas can give you some good advice!
