How do I make Kombucha?

Thread Starter
I've just been introduced to it and I am officially addicted. I can't afford the $3 a bottle, so I would like to make my own. I've found a website that indicated I could use a store bought bottle as the scoby, brew tea and add sugar. It also indicated not to use a metal bowl. Does anyone have any tips or other advice for me?

Also, do you believe it really is the magic elixir as advertised on the bottle?

TIA!

There are some step by step directions at that link, or a lot more if you google it.

And KT is great, but I don't believe in magic.

You can take the bottom half of your commercial tea and put it into a quart or 2quart sized jar of sweet lipton tea. Cover the jar with a cloth secured by a rubber band and place it in a dark place. A scoby will grow in no time. You'll have to tweak your tea to get the taste you like, but for that initial scoby, easy will do. Save all those commercial bottles so that you can bottle your own.
