Newborn Questions

Hi Mamas,

This is number 2 for me and I'm experiencing some new things...

1. This has happened about 4 times so far, all while nursing lying down. While I'm nursing milk will drip out of ds's nose??? is this normal? should I be worried?? It seems a little normal but also is a little alarming to see.

2. At the base of his umbilical cord is a little fresh blood. It either got irritated by his blanket or cover, should I hold off on the goldenseal until it dries?

3. his skin is looking a little flakey today (6 days old) what do you guys use to moisturize?

that's all I can think of for now. Thanks

My newborns have had milk drip out of their noses when burping/spitting up. This new baby has had it happen twice now, when he spit up a little.

I'm not familiar with goldenseal, but I've always had to use some stain remover on my newborns gowns due to blood from the cord on them. So, at least I think it's normal. I use betadine on the cord.

I call his skin flakiness "shedding out of his fetus skin". I don't put anything on it, but if I did it would be olive oil or coconut oil.

I don't remember any milk out the nose with DS, but it happened once with this one, when she coughed with the nipple still in her mouth. I think it's probably fine. If it were affecting his breathing or something, you'd know, right? I'd probably ask my doc/mw about it, because I'm like that.

flakey skin I just let be. grandparents seem to believe in baby lotion, but I don't.

The milk thing is normal, baby's just not really good at keeping things from backing up yet so likely he's swallowing and it's going upstream too. Breastmilk is considered a clear fluid and it will not irritate his little nose. Stuff's better then saline .

A little bleeding around the cord is normal esp if it got caught on something. If the bleeding becomes excessive you might want to talk to the pedi about it. I'm not familiar with goldenseal's properties, but I think just letting it dry again and keeping it clean is best.

I love burt's bees buttermilk baby lotion. My ds was so dry on his hands and feet that his skin started to crack and bleed! Most babies get a little flaky, esp if they lost all their vernix before birth but if it's really cracked some gentle oil like olive oil is good as is lanolin or a gentle baby cream. Lanolin also makes great baby lip balm, I know ds is super dry on the lips from all the power nursing!
