Oh wow it is really getting better.
My LO has been waking at least 10 times a night since he was 6 months old, basically every hour. He is now almost 11 months and for the past 4 weeks there has been a definite, consistent trend towards less waking.
He now sleeps about 2.5-3.5 hours between wakings, with a few shorter chunks towards morning. Last night he slept for 4.5 hours in the middle of the night!!!
I know this improvement may not last but it was VERY helpful for me to have the experience of such an improvement after his other pattern. I had started to believe what the "sleep experts" say, that it would never change without intervention. Now I know that it CAN and WILL change in time, especially with gentle help in that direction.
BTW, I found Sleepless in America to be very helpful. We stopped doing a before bed bath and I think that made a difference. Also, he is now sleeping in his own twin size bed on the floor with a safety gate around it. I lay with him to nurse & sometimes sleep part of the night with him but mostly I am in the other room with DP. This seems to be a better way for all of us to sleep.
