question about thrush

Thread Starter
My DS (5 weeks) has had thrush for about 3 weeks now. We are using oral suspension nystatin to treat it. It has improved but there are a few relentless patches that won't go away! My nipples haven't really bothered me but I am using a vinegar/water solution on them after nsg sessions. Any ideas about how I can clear up DS' thrush? Also, I am still nsg my toddler but she isn't being treated for thrush. Is this a contributing factor? It doesn't appear that she also has thrush but perhaps she just doesn't have the white patches?

Ugh! Thrush is no fun! The nystatin never got rid of it for us so I chucked it by the th day of treatment. What did work and is all-natural is GSE- grapefruit seed extract (not grapeseed). We swabbed GSE diluted in water in DS's mouth a few times a day and also on my nips after nursing. He never minded the taste- kinda sour- and it is very safe to use diluted. I also took some GSE tablets internally because I got infected by the time we chucked the nystatin.

I think it would probably be a good idea to treat your dd too, just to be safe. Even if she doesn't have any signs she could be passing it back to you and then to your ds.

Good luck mama!

Nystatin did work for us but you must treat yourself too (2-3 times a day w/ the cream). Follow the directions -use a qtip to rub it on the patches its a topical treatment. Good luck!

Depending where you live, there may be lots of nystatin-resistant yeast around. In my area the docs will not prescribe nystatin because of resistance.

I would definitely consider treating all three of you. It's very possible for it to be asymptomatic.
Nystatin is not the most effective treatment option. Miconazole is more effective, but the gel for babies may not be available where you live. GSE already been mentioned, or there's Gentian Violet (again, may not be available depending where you live).
