I need soothed

DS went for his 6 month checkup today and the Pedi told DH (DH takes him, I work during the day) that we should start feeding 3 meals a day. (?!?!?) He weighed in at 15lb 12oz which is the 25% for his age. I was just at the WIC office and they weighed him (in his cloth diaper) and he was dead on 50% (but they push him back 3 weeks because he was born at 37wks) He is happy and bouncy and gets free reign of the boobies all evening and night. I do work during the day, but I pump and his dad bottle feeds him.

I feel like I am starving the kid. I really want him to get the majority of his nutrition from breast milk and I don't want to affect my supply. I don't have an issue with playing with some solids, he sits like a champ, is VERY interested in food (like I have to pull it out of his mouth when he steals it) but feeding 3 jars of food a day like they suggested, that seems silly.

I'm really bummed. I have the world telling me the boobies aren't enough again.

Here is a pic of the milk monster and his double chin.

Mama! You're doing the right thing and I don't know any 6 month olds who need 3 meals a day. Follow his lead, let him explore if and when he's ready, and know that breastmilk is exactly what he needs.

He is adorable, by the way! And obviously not starving!

What a cutie!

I think the 3-meals-a-day for a 6 mo is standard ped's advice. I don't think he was saying you HAVE to. DS is 14 mo and still doesn't eat 3 MEALS a day. Our ped said that as long as he is getting one good meal a day (at his ONE YEAR visit) then that was great. Solids before one year are all for experimentation and fun.

you are doing great mama! head over to kellymom.com for info on starting solids, and check out the Baby Led Weaning thread over in Life With a Babe.

My DD didn't eat 3 meals a day until more like 16 months. She didn't eat anything until 10-11 months. And though I SAH, she rarely nursed during the day - too busy with other things! Only a quick nurse for naps, and then lots of nighttime nursing. She is now a happy, healthy almost-18month old.

My Ped was shocked that she didn't eat gobs of rice cereal at 4 months....

He looks wonderful, and it sounds like he is growing and thriving. Peds' advice varies SO MUCH - it's hard to know what to believe. If you think he's doing fine on milk alone, you are the mama and you know best. He may turn out to love solids and become a great eater, but he may not. You are the best source of nutrition he has!

He is ADORABLE!! What a gorgeous little man!! He looks so happy!!

At six months food is largely experimental. If he shows interest and has the signs of being ready, there is no reason not to let him try it at six months. I don't think letting him try it three times a day would be bad but expecting him to eat that much might really be asking a lot.

i just wanted to point out that not every ped reccomends 3 meals a day at 6 months, my ped actually said he would be happy if i EFBed as long as possible past 6 months if dd wasn't seriously fighting for food. i would just ignore your ped to be honest.

PS>>. your little guy is adorable!

I know not every ped will say that, but it is the 'standard.' Sounds like you have an awesome doctor!

The way our ped put it was that we could offer 3 meals a day.. not that we had to, or that he had to eat 3 meals a day.
