New Study: Breast Milk Should Be Drunk At The Same Time Of Day That It Is Expressed

Interesting study I came across (see link below)...doesn't bode well for the fact that I am freezing a supply that contains a whole day's worth of breastmilk!

I would need hundreds of small 2-4 oz bags to do it by time, as I am stockpiling 6 months worth of frozen milk!

That is very interesting, but it makes total sense.

Maybe moms could mark the bag w/a sharpie w/the time of day it was expressed (or a piece of tape on a container) so it could be pulled out of the freezer and used at similar times during the day.

Makes sense, but doesn't do much for the 120oz in my freezer that I have pumped mainly at night.

Neat!

I can appreciate the study, but to be honest I will just be happy my baby still gets breastmilk while I am away.

I haven't read it, but I think that by the title of it, it is just another article that tries to make breastfeeding seem more difficult than bottle feeding. Breastmilk taste different at different times of the day as well as different days.....

For real. Good grief....I think parenthood can be hard enough without worrying about stuff like this. I busted my butt to pump while working full-time when my boys were little. I was in the military and had to do overnights regularly, too....so sometimes I'd be away from the baby for over 30 hours at a stretch. If I had to worry about storing and labeling my milk with the time, I'd have gone nuts.

I agree. It annoys me the way giving "daytime" milk has been compared to giving a cup of coffee or a cappuccino - the article reporting the research was entitled "The possible role of human milk nucleotides as sleep inducers" and focussed on the sleep-inducing properties of night-time milk and NOT on any supposed stimulating properties of day-time milk. Just causes concern where there's no need for any.

Ah, just read the entire article (available here - click on the pdf button). The research was funded by an infant formula company (Laboratorios Ordesa S.L.). This may explain disparaging comments made by the researcher to the media such as the cup of coffee comparison, and "[i]t is a mistake for the mother to express the milk at a certain time and then store it and feed it to the baby at a different time." Grrrrrrrr.
