Is he reacting to my BM?

At this point he's mostly formula fed, and I know he's having some reaction to the (dairy) formula. But most of the time if I'm careful to burp him the spit-ups are minor with the formula. But he refuses to drink BM straight from a bottle, so I mix it with the formula, and within minutes, even with being burped, he's spewing the entire feed.

He does the same thing if he drinks it straight from the tap... within minutes he's spewing. This morning I notice he has a red ring around his mouth after eating the BM mix, but it's gone 20 minutes later...

I've lined up several BM donors, but I don't want to waste their time and effort if he's just going to spew BM...

How odd...usually dairy is the culprit in a spitty baby, but not likely if he's handling formula better. Connor was also very sensitive to soy in my diet, so I'd say to try cutting that from your diet. There's no soy in the formula he's on, right?

There aren't actually any easily available soy free formulas. Even the organic formulas have soy oil and soy lecithin in them. But my diet is entirely soy-free, has been for years. That's why I'm hesitant to switch him from a dairy based formula (which gives him congestion) to a soy based, because *I'm* sensitive to it.

Goodness...gluten?? Is there any gluten in formula??

Eggs? Have you been eating a lot of eggs?? (obviously none in formula)

I have no idea!!

Have you considered reflux? BM is light, good for easy digestion but I think formula 'sits' in the tummy so maybe not spit up as easily?

There is a lactose and soy free formula available.

Gluten may be the culprit, as could corn. I've heard of some babies not being able to deal with the corn. It's amazing how something that you would never think about could actually agitate baby's tummy.

Good luck!! Hopefully the BM still works out for you.

Actually, that one has soy in it, too. Got a can of it sitting in the kitchen.

The weirdest thing... I put an ounce of BM into a bottle (straight, not mixed) tonight when he was half asleep, he drank the entire thing without fussing, then asked for the boob. He had a little bit of spit up, but never spewed like he had been. I have to wonder if it was something I'd eaten a few days ago that was triggering him, since this was BM from yesterday.

cristeen, i'm having very similar issues. we use fortified bm in bottles to help her with vit d uptake because she is at risk for osteopenia. i have not noticed an increase or correlation to the spit up when we use the fortified bottles. as a matter of fact, as we've reduced the amount of bottles and increased breast feedings, i've noticed more spit up. she just had all breastmilk from the tap, and about 30 mins later when i changed her dipe, she threw up a good portion of it.

her poops are also a bit runny...so i guess i'll be cutting out dairy to see if that helps. i haven't had eggs in a while so i know it's not eggs. i haven't had allergy issues since dd1 17 yrs ago!!!

good luck!

Are you taking any herbs or medications to increase supply? Fenugreek and blessed thistle make my little one have horrible gas and tummy aches and increased spitting up. Just a thought.

I'd go on an acid reflux diet for a week and see if it helps. Cut out anything spicy, acidic (all juices), or gassy. I spent the last year on literally meat and potatoes with a few select fruits and veggies b/c my babe had reflux so bad. It is usually dairy that causes reflux but that's clearly not it here and formula would sit better than BM because it's thicker it doesn't contain the triggers like acid and spice.
