Also--7 VEs! That number is astounding to me. The thought of it gives me a twinge of nausea or something--as a mother and mw both. SEVEN? Do women really get that many VEs in the hospital? Or more, I suppose?
I was checked at least 10-12 times in my first labor. My vba2c labor I was checked 2x. once when I was asking for the paracervical block (8cm) and then about 10 minutes later when my doula let the ob know I was pushy. baby was out 10 mins later.

Insert 2 fingers, slide them apart until you feel the edges of the cervix on both sides. You need to practice on a diagram or prop (i think certain jar lids correspond...) but you can get good at estimating without seeing how far apart your fingers actually are. Of course i couldn't reach around my bump to get my 2 fingers in deep enough to feel anything until DD was halfway out!
