bottles

gavin got his first bottle tonight, and surprisingly he wasn't thrilled about it! with the way this kid loves to eat, i thought he wouldn't care where the milk was coming from, but he had trouble getting a good seal on the nipple, sucked in air cconstantly. we even switched bottles (tried a breastflow and a playtex nurser with drop-ins).

we'll keep trying, and there's 4 weeks until i go back to work, but it definitely surprised me that he didn't suck it down.

how are the rest of you doing with introducing the bottle?

Lucy had her first bottle last weekend. She was 6 weeks old. She sucked it down like a pro- I almost felt BAD about it, like couldn't she have hesitated even a little bit?!?! But I head back to work in a week, so I had no choice

ian was like that.

Awww - I don't know what to tell you. But I ALWAYS have problems with air sucking and bottles. They only seem to make ones that my kids suck air with. When Maddie was a baby, Evenflo made one called 'Ultra' which worked like magic, but none since.

Good luck finding one that works for him. Oh - maybe try the new Mam one? It's nipple is oblong - definitely looks more like a 'moms' nipple and Charlotte could suck the life outta that one

We're still using the tiny Evenflo Comfi ones because she won't take more than an ounce out of any other bottle before just clamping her mouth shut and waiting for the right nipple to be made available.

i also felt a twinge of hurt in my heart when Cora took a bottle right away. i had to leave the room

but yeah, she took one right away. we started just after she her 1 month birthday. We are using the Born Free bottles and they really do seem to reduce the sucking of air, they have a special thing between the nipple and the bottle that reduces air somehow.

now if i could just remember to pump enough to build up a stock of milk!

Ha! We gave Grey his first yesterday, and I felt the same way. Really, not a SECOND of hesitation there, and he wasn't even THAT hungry. :P And here I've been telling myself that he really likes to cuddle after eating and stuff and that I'm not just a milk spout to him...

Oh well, he's happy, and he still knows what to do with a boob, so I think that's all you can really ask for.

We're using the Born Free ones also, they're designed to reduce the air sucking. I hate to think how much he would be spitting up with a regular bottle/nipple combo.

My experience is a little different, since my guy was starving when we introduced the bottle... so he was more than happy to take it.

We -or rather, DH- will be introducing a bottle next week. I have one born free, the rest I bought are Dr. Browns, so hopefully she will like them. Otherwise, I'll have some returning to do at BRU.

no doubt!! Seems like every 15 minutes of available time, I've got a stack of things to do - none of which are, get attached to the pump. Must prioritize this!

Sam also did not hesitate, to my husbands joy, and my dismay. Is it weird that I wanted to keep only breastfeeding him? I am not going back to work or anything (school eventually), but I do want to be able to eventually go out for an extended period of time, sans baby..so it's a good thing, I suppose.

I have the Mam bottle. It truly does look more like a nipple. Sam likes the it, and has no problem, though he's never met a nipple he doesn't like. I was thinking of trying the nipple within a nipple bottle. Sam seems to swallow lots of air with all the ones I have.

Camry is in the other camp- my mom and DH have each given her a bottle and she sucks once, spits it out and gives this piteous yelp, like, "HEY! Where's my boob??" She's going to have to try again this morning, as I have a dentist appointment. Since I have more dental work to get done, and a couple field trips with the big kids that I don't want to drag her along on, I really hope she starts to accept, if not love, a bottle. My other 2 bf kids switched back and forth like a dream. We've tried the Playtex nurser w/drop ins and the new Nuk wide mouth but the flow is waaayy to fast on that one, even w/the slow nipple. I guess my attitude would be different if I was going back to work, or had to supplement, but I won't be one bit sad for her to take a bottle eagerly.

hijacking...
ds1 has been nursing 3+ years and has never had a bottle. We tried one a couple times and he wanted nothing to do with it. I really do not want to give ds2 one as I do not have to go to work and I would never leave him with a sitter, but, I am concerned that the economy will cause me to have to go back to work sooner than planned. Any tips other than what is in all the books. Is it possible to just give one once or twice a month. Or just once a week? Or should I wait and just cup feed?

My little girlhas had 2 bottles so far, and she gets some air but deals with gas well. We did playtex drop-ins. she didn't mind and niether did i.

I am blessed not to have to give a bottle. Gabe (2 yrs) never had one and I don't plan to give one to Susanna either. I did attempt a pacifier in the car seat and that was a complete failure.

I didn't think I would give a bottle or a pacifier. . .but due to all my BFing issues I did give my guy a bottle of expressed BM twice and he sucked it down with no hesitation (while I cried). Now that I think our BFing relationship is settling out, I won't give him another bottle for awhile (if ever) don't want to confuse him after our rocky start. Might be nice to be able to leave him with DH for a few hours sometimes, but otherwise he won't need bottles.

Funny though, he is such a sucker, but won't take the paci at all. The past week he wants to be attached to the boob from 5pm till 9pm nonstop! It makes me really sore and obviously its more about sucking and comfort than about calories. . .so I have broken down and tried to give him the pacifier, but he hates it. He will suck a finger in a pinch though. Smart guy--if it has milk or is attached to me he's okay with it. If its just empty rubber, forget it.

My guy will take a bottle. I work a couple nights a week and he does great with DH.

We use Dr. Browns.

I tried an Adiri bottle with Emery this morning and he took it right away. I'm actually jealous and worried that he'll like it better than me when I go back to work next week.

hi gate crashing i could never get my lo's to take bottles chloe wouldn't take any, cameron to a couple of oz once so did caitlin and caden took a few times but that was all.
it's pretty sad that you don't have smp (statury maternity pay) over there here i think mums get 9 months paid time off work.
i tried twice. he acted confused, and spit it out. exclusively breastfed baby, this one.

Seems that Rowan will take to whatever you put in his mouth - he'll suck your finger off if you let him. Which is ultimately a little sad that he's not so picky that is Has to be mommy!
We're just having a problem finding one that doesn't have air issues. I haven't tried Browns - it's next on the list.
