On Sunday at around 2 p.m. I started having painful contractions that were about 10 minutes apart and were really painful.
I waited 2 hours before I called my midwife. She said to try rocking on my hands and knees to try and turn the baby, since she was posterior and that was causing my back labor. DH got home around an hour later and started filling up the birthing pool.
By 6 my midwife arrived, and the contractions were still 10 minutes apart and very painful. She determined that my baby wasn't actually posterior, but that she had her head tilted the wrong way, and that was causing my painful contractions and was the reason she wasn't moving down. So we used the birthing ball, squatting, etc. to try and get her to position herself correctly. I was in a lot of pain, and the contractions weren't getting any closer together.
At around 8ish I asked to be check and I was 4 cms and 100% effaced. I got in the birthing pool and felt 1000 times better. By around 10 the contractions were every 3 minutes and I had progressed to 7 cms. I labored in the pool until 12, when I had the urge to push.
I tried pushing, but it hurt so so much. I couldn't even believe the pain I was in. Nothing that had worked in my previous labor worked to ease the pain. I felt hopeless and started crying. I was so overwhelmed by the pain, it felt like labor was never going to end. Everyone calmed me down, and convinced me to keep pushing. I tried pushing for an hour, and at about 1 a.m. on the 26th I had a breakdown. If you've ever seen movies with a woman in labor screaming and cursing, well that was me!
I started yelling that no one was helping me, that they better get me to a hospital for my epidural. I begged DH to drive me there on his own. They kept explaining to me that at 10cm they wouldn't give me the epidural, that I'd have to push through the pain. I begged them to break my water, because I felt like I was making no progress with my pushing with the bag intact. They did, and told me to lay on my bed and try to rest since I had been up for almost 20 hours at that point.
I laid down and DH laid next to me and just rubbed me head and shushed me to sleep. A few minutes later I had the intense urge to push, and I flipped over on my back and started pushing with all my might. I felt her head descend very quickly. My midwives weren't prepared at all they didn't have their gloves on yet. They told me to stop pushing but I yelled at them and kept doing it. They ended up catching her with the chux pads! She came out screaming and wiggling, with a full head of curly black hair!
Amelia weighed 8lb 6oz, and was 20 3/4 inches long! She took to breastfeeding right away, and has been sleeping and eating great so far! I'm really sore from all the work I did to get her out, but overall I feel really great!
