He gained how much?!!

Ok guys, I have a question for you. We went to the Dr today and Dylan got weighed. After getting home, I am having a hard time believing that it is the right weight. Here's the details....

Born: 6lbs 9 oz
4 days old: 6 lbs 5 oz
16 days old: 7 lbs 10 oz

Is it possible that in 12 days he gained 1 lb 5 oz?

I asked the doctor is that is normal and he said that it is amazing for a breastfed baby. I really should have asked to have him reweighed. I was standing at the scale when he was being weighed, but I didn't look at it myself. It's driving me crazy wondering.....(not that it really matters, but I'm curious!)

Yes, very possible! And breast milk is high in fat, so I don't think it is that surprising necessarily. Some babies do gain a pound a week for the first few weeks!

Yup- totally possible- good job mama! DS 2 was 9lbs 9 oz at birth and at his one month he was 13 lbs 6 oz!

DS1 was 6 lbs 4 oz at birth, and 8 lbs 8 oz at day 12.
DS2 was 8 lbs 1 oz at birth, and still 8 lbs at our 5 day visit, but almost 11 lbs at our 2 week visit.

They are both exclusively breastfed, on demand.

average weight gain for breastfeed babies 0-4 mos is 5.5 to 8.5 oz/day that works out to 3/4 to 1 1/4 oz per day average. there were days in the nicu that millie gained 2 oz +. here are her weights (since discharge):

10/4/09 7lbs .04 oz
10/9/09 7lbs 6.5 oz
10/14/09 8lbs
10/19/09 8lbs 4.2 oz

and we go back tomorrow for more blood work so i'll see how much she's gained in the last 10 days or so. in total, she's gained over 3 1/2 lbs from her lowest weight and that was as of 4 wks old. also keep in mind she didn't eat for the first 8 days of her life, so that left her gaining 3 1/2 lbs in about 3 wks which would be 1 lb/week.

gotta love breastmilk!

My 1st son gained a pound a week for the 1st six weeks, then he slowed down and ended up being a small baby again!

Evan has gained about 1/2 pound a week so far...

Clementine was 6 pounds, 15 oz at birth, 6 pounds 9 ounces at 4 days.

Day 14 she was 7 pounds, 9 oz and at her one month checkup she was 8 pounds 14 ounces.

Babies can gan a lot at first. But my son, who was 75th percentile for weight at 4 months old dropped waaaay down after 6 months. He's a super skinny almost 3 year old now. I had LCs telling me in the early days that he was overeating....he once gained 22 ounces in 11 days. It's NOT possible to overfeed a BF baby. They gain how they are meant to gain!

It's very possible! Jack weighed 7lbs 12oz at birth, 7lbs 8oz at 3 days and 8lbs 3oz at 5 days. He gained 11oz in 2 days!

very possible!!! Sydney was:
7 lbs 15 oz at birth
day later: 7lbs 8 oz
8 days later 8 lbs 4 oz
7 days later 9 lbs 4 oz
6 days later 10lbs 1/2 oz

The mama's milk makes them grow nice and plump!!!

Both of mine gained about a pound a week for the first 6 weeks (or more for my son), they didnt stay tiny for long! Everyones breastmilk is different, some of us have more fat than others! Enjoy your chubby baby to come!

Thanks everyone for posting their stats. None of the books I have say anything about them gaining that much weight. It's so interesting and amazing what breastmilk can do. I guess I don't have to worry that I'm not making enough milk for him!

millie was 9 lbs today. that's a total gain of 3lbs 2 oz in 5 wks! i'm happy because the nicu drs insisted that we fortify her milk. guess who isn't fortifying????
