Forgot it was in the oven, and warmed something up in there (150C). San Francisco starter.
I guess it's about time I ruin a ferment!

I've lost more starters than I can count.....now I take a half cup or so and freeze it or dry it. This way I always have a back-up. I do this for kefir grains too.

Thanks for the sympathy. I'm sad about it! I bought it internationally. But what can you do?

I'm wondering - I took a bit of it out and separated it out into a container with some flour and water, to see if anything was still alive in there, because it wasn't cooked all the way through.. The bottom was kind of mushy. It was only on 150C for a few minutes.
Am I crazy? Is it possible that it's still alive?? I don't want to waste my good flour.
I love the idea of putting half of it away. I'm definitely going to start doing that!

It is worth trying it before you throw it away. Starters are really durable if around for a while.

I remember when I killed one of my starters. It was a sad day.

If you ever get up the VT way, I will share some of my starter.

It's alive!!!!! It's alive!!!!!!!!

Is there a happy dance smiley?

I came home today, and it was happily bubbling and gurgling. I'm so excited! I actually don't know what to do at this point, do I just stick it in the fridge now? I can't believe it worked, it was in a pretty hot oven for about 10 minutes - cracked and ruined my mason jar!
